If I want to cut the cord, but still have access to local news and international news what is the best option.
I can always hook on IPTV for other stuff, and you get streaming of Prime, Netflix etc fright off the TV.

Any iptv (most? ) will have Canadian local channels from across Canada.
I have
11 local CBC
19 local CTV
A few random local Global and City channels
And whole categories of Canada/US/World news

Is that using a legit kind of IPTV service? Just as I have a couple of Android boxes now. I had tried a sketchy IPTV service before, so I just don't want to go down that road again. I'm just thinking stations that are available OTA wouldn't be that bad.

Happy with my IPTV, but it's always a fight to find a good one. And I don't blame anyone who doesn't want to go down that road. OTA is great here. If i wasntinterested in Canadian channels I think it, in conjunction with all the fast services available, would be plenty of 'live' TV. I get about 70 OTA channels (after removing religious/shopping/Spanish) and with the Tablo tuner I get an excellent guide (free) and we'll ask very usable DVR for any of the 140 total channels (including 70 fast channels). I love that thing. Canadian OTA provides way less, in most cases.

Is there a way to get live tv without having to get Telus or Shaw? Right now we only use some streaming, Netflix and Disney. When my inlaws house/dog sit, they like live tv. I do also have Apollotv, but it doesn't play live tv very well. It usually will just buffer. And my inlaws can't figure out how to use it. I want to get something that will work for when my inlaws are dog sitting for us. They want their local news and sports.

I’d imagine you could use an antenna; my wife won’t permit it.

My parents live in LA, they only had OTA TV for years. I didn't even realize though for the longest time - there's a zillion channels OTA and their TV had a built in guide for OTA. I was astounded.

Do they have a Telus or Shaw TV subscription? I have Telus myself and I have also installed the Telus app on my Android boxes. It does have a guide and the channel numbers would be what they are used to. I would guess Shaw has something similar. Hopefully that would be a little easier for them when they are over.

My parents were with Shaw for TV for years, now under the Rogers umbrella. I've never found an app for either Shaw or Rogers for Google TV. Rogers has transitioned the old Shaw phone app for casting to the just beautifully named "RogersXfinityStream" app, I guess built on some unholy licensed Comcast tech or something?

My "cord" is a satellite signal...the only good thing about it is that when I signed up I gave them a Calgary address....although I live in BC. Had a local installer set the satellite up (we are very rural, so no OTA or cable options) and I get ALL Flames games...no "blackouts". That's the good. The bad is that I watch NO other TV at all, so it costs me close to $100/mo. I've put it on hiatus for this season and have been using Mario via VPN to Japan. Given that I have GB Fibre it works well. I expect that some day it will be blocked though...and then I have no idea what I'll do.
Oddly, with it on hiatus, my home TV still works fine (can't access via the web though) and the satellite continues to be OK. I guess someone forgot to flip a switch.
I do sub to various things: Prime, N'flix, MHz, but am intending to rotate them as most of what I want I can find on (ahem) other sites, also via VPN.
But live stuff like Flames games? That's my big concern...don't want to lose those.

NHL.tv works with a VPN...buy a subscription with paypal and a fake address. It's $99/year but you will get ALL NHL games not just Flames and both feeds. I used Taiwan for ZERO blackouts

what iptv service are people using? we've had apollotv and it doesn't work for livetv for us. I'm going to subscribe to crave and tsn and sn, but for local tv, what would be a good service without having to go to Rogers.

if you are actually paying you can get local TV through primevideo with StackTV. Although if you are subscribing to all these things you are creeping up on cable rates

Also don't forget the local channels are available with an antenna. It doesn't take much to be able to pull in CTV, CBC, Global and CityTV. Omni and Yes are weaker.

IPTV services are always hit and miss, sometimes require VPN, etc. Most people are reluctant to share provider for a number of reasons, including above. As good as they sometimes are, it's still not like watching cable TV.- which you already know if you subscribed to the service you mention. I'd definitely try OTA. Depending on where you live they can be few/several/many channels available, and the broadcast quality is excellent. Most TV's will have OTA tuner built in. I bought a Tablo tuner (and love it!) to have full guide and DVR capabilities, but I get close to 100 OTA channels in NW Chicagoland, so we find it definitely worth it. But living here I also do have iptv to get Canadian content.

Can't speak for others on this board, but for me the tuner isn't the issue. The problem is the antenna. I live in an apartment in downtown Victoria and it I have never found one that works.
You essentially need to be living in a house, preferably in the suburbs, where you can place it in an unobstructed spot. Just my experience.
