I suspect Kane was close to returning and a new excuse was needed.

Everyone knows that the abdomen is connected to the knee bone and that you cant have concurrent surgeries.
I'm beginning to wonder if Kane signed for the Oilers just for the free Health Care.
You get guys like Fuzz complaining about ER wait times and the grim state of Alberta Health Care...well yeah! Evander Kane is using it all! All the Health Care!! The guy needs like his own personal Hospital.

Rumour is Kane paid for his debts with one of his kidneys so that's why he's on IR.

Oilers medical staff can't properly diagnose or treat things, but they can plan out logistics form purposes of cap retention.
Likely before the playoffs were done they hatched this plan along with Kane:
1)Lose the Cup (check)
2)Kane can enjoy the summer instead of getting the surgery needed. Golf, gambling, crazy women (check)
3)Just prior to training camp, to be able to go LTIR, have surgery then, as opposed to Summer. Internal hernia surgery always tough to diagnose timeline for the NHL and cap issues (check)
4)In addition, the pesky knee issues he's played with for years can give a reason to have highly optional surgery, so plan that surgery as mandatory and have it occur in early 2025, with a 8 week return timeline. That 8 week return will lineup with just past the trade deadline. NHL can't sniff around cam circumvention with a vague internal surgery and then a more common 2 months knee surgery recovery, even though both surgeries could've been handled in the summer or early fall and would be back by November.
Instead Kane gets a relaxed timeline, a 7 paid months off and some surgeries handled. As long as he didn't rack up more unpayable gambling debts or impregnate any more women, it's a good gig. Oilers get cap savings to waste on marginal, low impact players at the deadline.

^ I'm certain that's how it played out. Kane probably retires at the end of his current deal. Maybe the Oilers buy him ou.... or better yet he retires and they promote him within the organization at the end of the year. He'd be perfect to mentor younger players, make him a scout or development coach.

No chance that Kane retires and leaves money on the table unless they give him equal credit at Grand Villa Casino.
I hope the Oilers try some cap shenanigans. They have no assets other than 2026 1st. Might as well dump the last scraps into trade deadline moves, they won't fetch any premium return.
And Evander Kane is not Mark Stone on Stone's worst day. A 33-year old Kane coming back in the playoffs after a year off and two surgeries, I fail to see how that's anything but a huge risk.

Impossible to know if he racked up more gambling debt but we know he was at best 1 out of 2 anyway.

It's been a while for me but are they still handing out Family Allowance cheques?
I may have a motive for all these kids.

No movement clause. He can't be sent down to the minors without his approval.
