Even the best goalie ever (Hasek) couldn't win a cup with Buffalo because he didn't have a Stanley cup caliber roster in front of him. Took him going to a stud Red Wings team.

Boston won without having a single player score more than 62 points in the regular season. Thomas was a stone wall for them
Washington won with a patchwork team and a Red Hot Holtby, they were hardly considered anything but a running joke moving into the year.
St. Louis Blues were absolutely dog #### before Binnington got red hot.
The Flames are missing offensive threats for sure, but their Goal tending and Defence looks promising looking into the future.

You kind of just helped make my point. Boston had Chara, Lucic, Krejci, Bergeron, Marchand. Washington had a guy who is going to break Wayne Gretzky goal record, Backstrom, Carlson. St. Louis had Pietrangelo, ROR, Tarashanko.
We have nothing close to that on the roster.

You're looking at this with a presentism bias. Those teams at the time were far from being considered contenders. St Louis and Washington were poster boy teams for not having a chance in hell under any circumstance. Boston was seen as a team that was full of 3rd liners, and to be fair they were. They won on team defense and goaltending.
Having a star goalie is a key component in winning a cup. Only two teams in recent memory have won without star goaltending. Chicago with Crawford, and Colorado with Kuemper.

You sure about that? Washington was a contender year in and year out. Holtby was on the bench to start the playoffs. Binnington looked like a bum for half a year until they made a coaching change. Washington got rid of Holtby soon after and St. Louis has been trying to get rid of Bennington prior to this season.
Chicago won with Niemo. Pittsburgh won 2 cups with Matt Murray.
Most of those teams had the pieces before they had the goaltending. It’s going reverse for us but that’s ok. We will have to draft talented players to play in front of Wolf.

I've actually come around on a Petterson trade (depending the cost) because of how good Wolf has been.
We're not tanking if this is who he is. Our window is starting to open.
Adding Petterson would give us a 1c and 1g for the next 7 years.
We have a solid base of prospects and young players with defence being the strongest aspect.
We have a solid group of vets.
I'm not sure we have the pieces though.
I imagine they'd be asking for some stupid like 1st + zary + parehk which would set us back too much.
But if it's NjD 1st + honzek + Sharangovich, I take it and don't look back.

1 player doesn’t open your window lol.
Trading for Petey makes no sense when you ship out the pieces you need to play with him and lack more elite talent.
Probably why rebuilds in Canada just don’t work. Patience seems to be a very big issue.

If they stop you from bottoming out they do.
And its not just Wolf. Wolf's been the biggest piece of it so far but it's not just him.
Coronato and Zary look to be strong top 6 options going forward.
You have Parehk, Bruz, Morin and Mews. One of them should break out.
You have a solid group of vets.
Throw in a 1c and 1g in Petterson/wolf and that could be a consistent contender.
It's not like every contender has 5+ superstars.
If the flames aren't bottoming out then they might as well go for it. Otherwise they're stuck in purgatory.

I’m personally in the don’t want to lose our 1st round pick and end up in the mushy middle camp. I’d prefer we get a top 10 pick.

Well having 1 isn’t enough and it’s not how contenders are built. It really is all Wolf keeping us from bottoming out. Coronato and Zary have made a lot of progress but we are also 28th in scoring.
It’s debatable if Pettersson is even that clear cut #1 guy or more or a Lindholm type that needs his wingers to prop him up. I don’t want to be the team that take the chance to fife that out.
Also teams in year 1 don’t make those trades. 21/22 Flames yup they went after Eichel.

If wolf is single handedly keeping us from bottoming out then yes his career prime is our window. He is the young superstar in the making we have and need to build around.
Hes 23. Say his prime is 10 years until he is 32, which is roughly the same period for Kipper.
So our window with Wolf is the next 10 years. Pettersson is locked up for 8 years.
He is a bonfafide 1c. Hes 441pts in 443 gp and has had Selke nods.
Hes an Eichel caliber player to me
I'd rather build it naturally but you need to pick from the top of the draft to do that. With wolf's emergence that's not really any option for us anymore.

I think the issue is that if this who Wolf is at the moment, this team will not be bottoming out to get the top 3 or top 5 draft picks needed to get a 1st line center. And Wolf is probably only going to get better.
If plan B is to use thoughts and prayers to hopefully draft a 1st line center deeper into the draft, the chances of a successful rebuild goes down significantly. It's possible to land one later in the draft, but any team would be lucky to do it once in a decade if at all.
I don't think most people wanting to trade for Pettersson are losing patience, but rather they just don't think it can work anymore. I am not sure if Pettersson is the guy, but I am not hopeful that we will get that elusive 1st line center any other way than a trade or free agent signing at this point.
Or we could trade Wolf to truly bottom out and hope Zarubin is the next best thing by the time a rebuild is poised to take the next step.

So your expecting is Wolf is to be the best every year. Even the very best goalies in the NHL have up and down seasons. Heck Bob was on the bench in the 23 playoffs. Like I said previously Holtby wasn’t even the starter when the Caps started the playoffs.
Wolf is a star but he will also not have .920 save % annually. Especially when we move on from vets in put in more young players.
We can Sutter this up tho. Let’s start moving picks and prospects for now guys. Walker Duber and Pospisil are showing out they need help.

Connor Geekie is a healthy scratch for the Lightning today.
Has he been playing poorly recently?

I am expecting him to be good enough to keep us out of the bottom lottery teams. Right in that mushy middle.
Drafting 11-20 OA for several years during a rebuild is going to make it difficult to build contending team.
I don't know if Pettersson is the guy to chase or if anything needs to be done right now, but eventually they will probably have to tap into the trade market and top line centers aren't available every year via trade.

Burube was hired about 3 weeks before Binnington was called up and he didn't get his first game until almost a month later which was a 3-0 win over the Flyers.

This would make sense if Petey was old, he isn't
IF they trade him some team is going to be happy they got off their wallet (like Eichel) and the rest of the league will be Pokemon face.

The Flames put up 7 on him easily. He went on a heater in the playoffs. Did the blues go into the playoffs with 2 natural centres ? Zero #1 D
