As a hockey message board you can guess strategy, internal conflicts, upper management involvement, potential trades, player involvement/interest/GAF, off ice issues, etc… but don’t you dare guess about an injury.

The way that knee hyper-extended I was sure something gave. Great news!

I wish I could remember who it was, but there was another player that had something similar happen but it looked even worse, but then came back after hardly missing any time. Typically when you see the knee bend that way, it's a lot worse.
I'm still a little apprehensive to get too excited until they come up with the diagnosis, but this is encouraging news for sure.

Apparently lots of swelling. Hopefully it's just a non-permanent contusion type injury. Great news so far.

The meniscus could still be damaged. At that point, the options are a trim (4-6 weeks), or a full repair (6-8 months).
The trim usually results in short term success, but often ends up with arthritis and/or knee replacement at an older age. More and more athletes are going with the full repair to ensure longevity. (see: JJ McCarthy).

No need to rush the rehab either.

Yeah don’t Monahan the guy. Shut him down if there’s any grey area about what has or hasn’t been damaged.

They specifically said no ACL or MCL tear, which is great news. However, they didn't mention the PCL, which is at risk in a hyperextension injury (and consistent with him bracing the back of his knee as he was lying there on the ice), but at least it's a less serious injury. And, as others have mentioned, we have not had any word yet on whether there were any meniscal tears. Surgery is still fairly likely, but it's now much less likely that this will be a career-ending injury.
