Exactly. Not saying this is what I would do but I think that is what will happen.

I think Andersson has been a little overrated this year, mainly thanks to the hot start.
OOT teams and fans think highly of him. Flames management need to capitalize on that.
His return would probably be worth more to this team than his (costly) extension.

Now, he said the exact same thing about Gaudreau, so I’m sure he has learned. That said, if Conroy’s intention is to keep Andersson, I’m sure he will leave that door open as long as he can.
Also, as I mentioned, right now, Andersson isn’t even a footnote on CJ’s trade board.
In actuality, I think there’s very little discussion around Andersson.
|
And that would be a mistake IMO.
Conroy needs to be pro-active here. I get wanting to keep Andersson, but if there are indications he wants to play for a contender and doesn't want to stick around for a re-build then you should be shopping him now or at the latest at the draft.
Waiting until the 2026 deadline would be a mistake.

Disagree, Andersson has a lot of good hockey left in his career and the Flames have more than enough space to accommodate his raise.

Our CP insiders, I believe, have hinted at the fact that Ras wants to play for and sign with a contender.
I'd hope the Flames would be proactive as Ras' current contract adds a decent amount of value to his acquisition price.
...unless Conroy is just taking the approach "just wait and see Ras, we'll be a contender!!!"

If Andersson isn't moved by this deadline I imagine that he's moved by the draft. Won't stop posters here from freaking out about it.

I am not too worried about what the media chatter on Andersson. Conroy should be putting out there that they don’t want to move him unless they can’t turn down an offer

To me, Andersson is young enough that he can be part of the solution, so it's a tough call what to do with him. He's definitely an entertaining member of the team
At the same time, if you move him, you might add well move Weegar too and maybe the plummet down the standings will be beneficial long term

The Flames don't need to panic and can afford to hold out for a better deal, like they did with Markstrom. That being said, trading Andersson sooner than later could result in a much better draft pick this year, particularly with that Monahan trade hanging over the organization. It could mean the difference between the 9th and the 25th+ overall.

28 years old. Doesn't sound like he wants to spend his prime on a rebuilding team.

ETA: Almost all the posts since the original tweet post are discussing what the Flames should do now that Andersson doesn't want to be here. But that will be the narrative now.

It's not a tough call at all for me. Andersson is the perfect example of how we should operate going forward. We got his best years on a great deal, and we can probably get some good pieces to fit with what we are doing going forward. Let someone else pay him on his over 30 deal for 8 years.

Problem with moving him at the draft is that is when draft picks are at their highest value. GMs want to make picks at that point. Between now and the TDL is when the picks are valued less and the players are valued more.

Exactly this. If only picks are being offered now, take them. Give Conroy extra ammo for the draft to either move up or trade for players

What makes rasmus really valuable is his contract.
We need to grade hom this deadline so maximize that value. Otherwise we're probably looking at a hanifin return.

Don't make personnel decisions on 1 hypothetical. The trade is done, let's the chips fall as they may. Trade Andersson early on the basis that we want to fall further in the standings, and watch the hockey gods reward the Flames with a Jake Virtanen at 6th overall while the late spot they would've been at without trading him yields a Pasternak.

I think with the number of teams that are stuck in the bottom half of the league again, at the draft when the spots and players available at those spots become more known, a few teams may take the experienced Andersson over a prospect that's a few years away. Where's Chiarelli working now? A Reinhart return would be a nice start on an Andersson trade.

Possibly but I think in that case teams will push for the trade to be picks in the 2026 draft - which I’m fine with. It’s just becoming more and more rare for players to be traded for picks in the days leading up to the draft or on draft day. It does happen but it’s more rare than it used to be.
