Because the USA is next door! It's not a total explanation but we are affected by their ability to poach our doctors and even their tax rates.

One more death in every thousand births seems small until you consider that in Calgary there are roughly 14,000 births per year so that is an extra 14 women dying in a relatively midsized city per year. An extra 50 in Alberta and a woman per day across Canada
But okay, that is pretty much the same.

You seem to be stuck on very specific issues and while I am not saying that the Canadian system is fantastic, I do think that a single payer system is significantly better for the general population relative to the United States.
People in the United States not receiving healthcare does lead to an increase in deaths. The increasing divide between the have and have not elements of the population is shown to have a negative outcome on life expectancy. The United States is a deeply troubled country and it somehow has people voting against their best interests as they are governed by fraudsters and oligarchs.

What do you guys think was the real idea behind taking back our pension funds, kicking out federal policing services, taking control of regulatory processes etc?
It's not even secret, several members of her team have openly opined about statehood prior to the president openly discussing absorbing us.
It's never going to be troops marching over, it's going to be a mock plebiscite.

I would prefer she not attend, but I think she committed to go prior to Trump really shooting off his mouth. To cancel now would damage Alberta's interests in my view. And it would not hurt to establish a positive relationship going forward.
If Trump starts to say nice things about Alberta, all the better.

She should cozy up to Putin while she’s at it.

That doesn't make it and less embarrassing.
Someone should steal her passport so she can't come back.

Are you saying appeasement might be the right choice here? Appeasing leaders who threaten to take your land and sovereignty in hopes they soften their stance?
I wonder if there are historical examples of this being a good or bad idea. Hmm.

She committed to go prior to 2012? She's clairvoyant!

I don't think that's what infant mortality rate is, but either way a death is a death you are right.
It's one tenth of a percentage gap. That's more of what I was going off of.

Smith has been trying to act like a governor since before she was elected, to both the leadership of the UCP and then when she was officially elected premier.
Only a couple months ago she even went to a meeting of Western US Governors: https://lethbridgenewsnow.com/2024/1...u-s-governors/

Maybe Trump needs to float a map with only Alberta as the 51st state? I mean really Canada from coast to coast (on Hockey Night in Canada) being one state? C'mon that's just dumb.

You're right, I was thinking you were talking about maternal death rate associated with childbirth. I guess if it is the death of a newborn it is less tragic.
Also, the maternal death rate in the United States is roughly twice that of Canada and roughly 6 times that of Germany. Who could have foreseen that a system founded on not providing primary care to vulnerable populations ie the poor, the pregnant, and new mothers (who have minimal maternity leave as well) would have consequences? For anyone to comment on how good the United States healthcare system is, using emergency care as a benchmark, has absolutely no idea of health systems and the root causes of disease and associated deaths.

There is a #### ton wrong with the American health care system, but please. Where nearly 20% of Canadians do not have access to a primary care doctor and wait times of up to 2 years to see specialists, I'm not sure Canada is a very shiny example of good health care.

Probably going to get a lot worse going forward with unwanted babies already being found in dumpsters in Texas, and pregnant mothers dying because doctors are afraid of going to prison for providing medical care, so mothers and unborn babies die at higher rates.
Good thing the Christofacists are running the show now. That was a brilliant move.
