Every government in the world wastes money (as does every private business). Any reason to believe Canadian governments waste more than any other country?

I look at the U.S., and then I look at Northern Europe, and I know which I’d rather Canada was more like. But YMMV.

So you think that income tax increases would directly target doctors?

Yet, you also think doctors are not going to be affected by capital gains tax?

All I know is the way I choose to live my life, I get more back from the carbon tax than I pay, so if it is different for you, perhaps try different choices?

Ya guys. Make different choices. Like not having children.

Just curious about the real GDP per capita stat, is that something that could be influenced by a large increase in immigrants, particularly non-earning students? Or are their numbers not counted? Seems it would be a drag on the per capita side of that.

If you have kids you get extra rebates for them. Try harder.

Hahaha. I am just enjoying you supporting the carbon tax that even the Liberals don’t support anymore!!

You can defend it all you want. It’s going to be gone soon.

High earners have always been materially better off in the U.S. than Canada. It’s true today, it was true 20 years ago, it was true 50 years ago. The U.S. is designed to be a winner-take-all society.

But there are trade-offs, even for the wealthy. You need to be much more careful about where you buy a home if you’re raising a family, given the extreme variance in quality of schools by district. You’ll need to save a lot more to send your kids to college. Given the crime rates, you may want to live in a gated community, with all its attendant hassles and restrictions. Your family’s health care is tied to your employment, so better hope you don’t get laid off. Work-life balance is also far more weighted towards work (enjoy your 2 weeks off a year). Government debt is even worse than in Canada, with the added bonus of annual showdowns over the budget that threaten to shut down government.

And that’s not touching on the ferocity and polarization of public discourse and politics, which despite the complaints in this thread, are far worse than the climate here in Canada.

This is exactly what I mean, and the chunder heads eat this #### up while your precious Conservative leaders lend them legitimacy. Stop being useless idiots.
Absolutely. I heard this week at work that Trudeau is a child molester and that he's really Castro's son.

That's old news, everyone knows he was born of Communist blood. Facts!

I notice people don’t complain about something like the GST being too low when they rail against government finances. A 2% increase would have a negligible impact on Canadians but would bring in an additional ~20 billion per year (put in another terms, 50% of the total money that has just been promised -not even spent yet- for $10/day daycare).

It’s odd that conservatives are so over-focused on minor issues because they perceive them as left wing instead of more pressing issues. That’s why nobody actually takes them seriously when they try to posit themselves as economic stewards. History has shown they just ruin the economy in ways Canadians don’t benefit from instead of ruining it in ways we do.

Yes. The dumbest thing Harper did was cut the GST from 7% to 5%. Took away so much money for nothing, nobody was complaining. Canadian conservatives get caught up in this all the time.

The whole daycare thing is just DINC's complaining that they're paying for other people's kids.

Also high-income single-earner families complaining.

The next carbon tax increase is set to increase again in April 2025 from 80$ per tonne to 95$. Right on time for when the election is likely to be set.

Basically the Liberals (and NDP) have made sure carbon tax is a yearly debate that just keeps on giving (or taking).

they shouldn't, the grant is for everyone and that's the bulk of the benefit. The subsidy which is income based is barely a quarter of that.

It pays me money. I come out ahead. Isn't that what Conservatives support? A FYGM attitude? It would be foolish for me to oppose it using your metrics.

How many times have you had COVID?

Even the BC NDP government is smart enough to say they would scrap carbon tax if it wasn't a federal requirement.

You think your life will improve if the tax is removed? Hmm.
