I thought I'd roll the dice a few weeks ago and got a Costco Islay. Officially "Kirkland Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky". I thought it was about $70 so I checked my transactions, and I think I paid a total of $63 - even better!
I was pleasantly surprised. It is definitely on the young side, but pretty smooth and tasty for its presumed young age. Quite peaty.
It is from an independent bottler, obviously, but speculation online is that it could be Caol Ila, and some estimate the age to be 6-8 years. It is reminiscent of Port Askaig 8 which I also found to be quite nice for its price and age, which some also suspect to be from Caol Ila.
Has anyone tried the Kirkland Highland one?
I was at a Robbie Burns dinner and the host let us blind taste what ended up being the Kirkland Speyside Sherry Cask 18 and it was VERY good. But I haven't been able to locate it - I tried a couple of locations in-person and called a couple more. It reminded me of Aberlour 16 a little bit, being a similar age and also a Speyside.
Anyone have any other pleasant surprises, Kirkland or otherwise?

Do you know how recently that Kirkland Speyside was purchased? I had a bottle of what might be the same stuff and it was delicious but it was from about three or four years ago. I was slowly sharing the bottle with friends and finally finished it last summer.

Looking for a bit of guidance - I'm going to ease up on the sauce and cut back drastically on consumption.
For me to do that, I need it out of the house. It's too easy to tap into them when it's available!
How would I go about selling anything that I have? Not sure of any legalities of reselling liquor at all.

You personally can't sell it, even privately. It's a $10,000 fine from AGLC.
I think it's possible to get a type of license for selling this, but unsure exactly what it would be. If they are very expensive bottles, you may wish to consider an auctioneer.

How big is your collection?
If not crazy, you could gift bottles away to friends. Use birthdays, dinner parties etc to start moving the product.
Also, I suggest having some non alcoholic alternatives on hand. For me, having substitutes has made it a lot easier to go through the habit of having a drink but not actually doing so.

You could give all your booze away to the person who buys your old toaster for hundreds/thousands?

1. I read your username as Macallan, which happens to be one of my favourites.
2. I'm an old pro at this, outside of my office is a drop-box for unwanted Scotch. Place your unwanted Scotch into the drop-box and I will take care of legally disposing it for you.
No charge. I do it as charitable work.

I've certainly seen bottles sold at auction, including through Hall's Auction Services, as part of estate sales.

Look here you...I have a Safe Scotch Depository right outside the office. Just drop it off and I'll take care of it! No muss no fuss!

Yeah, depending on the distillery/vintage you might be able to ship it to some of the auctions in the UK. Alberta is weird with buying through auction, but it is possible, so maybe selling?

Well, if you are already using empties to tip the garbage collector (like we all do) wouldn't this be a pleasant surprise for them! These ones aren't empty.

I had no idea that this was a thing, and I've bottles off guys before. I wonder how enforced it is, and have to think it is targeting people intentionally skirting the rules or making moonshine? Like are they really going to come down on someone who sells a bottle of scotch they don't want to someone privately?

If it is un opened, and high quality, I would imagine you could contact an auction.

I’d imagine it’s never/virtually never enforced. I may or may not have bought a bottle off a friend back in 2007.

I would bet that even if someone reported you they wouldn't do anything, not for a one time sale of a few bottles in a private sale.

If it's an occasional bottle or two without the ability to trace you (ie: Kijiji doesn't show your address) and not like an active set up that they can chase down, it's hard to and not really worth enforcing for a bottle or two. This further to the fact those listings don't typically confirm whether a transaction occurred.
But for many other situations, oh hell yes they enforce. I've heard a lot of stories about events with liquor and improper liquor licenses that get chased down fast. I remember being at a community centre for a birthday party and within a few hours of the party starting, some AGLC dude (not community centre) showed up to confirm we had a valid liquor license (we did). They don't always check, but any time I've been at an event that was checked, holy hell do they show up quickly.
