It's not wolfs fault, it remains conroy's fault. Stop caring about the opinions of current roster vets. Go to wolf, tell him you want to build a competitor around him, and tell him to keep playing like himself for a few years. Then, go a trade Andersson immediately. If you can trade Kadri, trade him too. But I doubt anyone is dumb enough to take that on.

Wolf could have easily flopped this year and the defense is palying better than I expected.

Remember though that we tried to sign Lindholm to an extension. We tried to sign Hanifin to an extension. They were only traded after we couldn't and were going to lose them for nothing. There are reports out there that we are looking at signing Andersson to an extension. There are reports out there that teams are interested in Andersson and that we are the ones who are not really engaging and will only trade him if the deal is good enough. Well any player can be traded if the deal is good enough. That's not a rebuilding mindset. There are reports out there that teams are interested in Backlund and Coleman, and we've flat out said they're not available. That's not a rebuilding mindset.
There are players and deals to be made now and have been there for the last 2 years that Conroy has been in charge if this team is truly rebuilding, and we're not seeing it.
What we are seeing is this team taking a wait and see approach. Give more ice time to young guys and don't sign or trade for veterans that keep us in the mushy middle. Well that's the prudent thing to do in our situation. To not do that would be downright negligent, and Conroy is not stupid. But it doesn't mean that we're rebuilding.
It's clear that Conroy sold Edwards on competitive way forward rather than a tear it down rebuild. Let the young guys play, let the vets regain form, don't waste money on UFAs, try to improve the team through the draft and trades as they come up, and see what happens.
It's also clear that the Flames sold many fans on their plan disguised as a rebuild. Trade a couple of expiring contracts and a goalie that doesn't want to be here and suddenly we're rebuilding? I don't think so.
I'm looking at what Conroy has said, and what he's been doing, and it's not a rebuild. But he's convinced many of you that it is, and I guess hope sells just as well as success. We'll see if it pays off, but I see more of the same. And yeah, I agree we all see what we want to see, you and me included.

The hate Kadri gets is absurd. He's currently tied for 106th out of NHL players with 29 points. His salary is tied for 105th amongst NHL players. He's basically par value. To say nobody would be dumb enough to take him as asinine.

Ignoring the fact that he has 4 more years left and is very obviously while watching declining in ability.
Even if it was this year alone on his contract I think it might be difficult. He's playing top minutes here and squeeking out very mediocre numbers. No doubt he's playing less minutes anywhere else in the league. Thus, very likely to produce below his "par value".

It's not that simple though.
I think there could also be the argument that he's slotted too high in the lineup in Calgary as a 1C and that potentially hurts more than it helps him (top defensive forwards / d pairings playing against him).
A team might still think that as a 2C (which is feasible with his $7M salary) that he could still really benefit a team and might not see too much of a production dip.

There are people on the board who doubt picking up Dylan Cozens because of remaining contract length, yet people think we can possibly trade Kadri? Unhinged.

Would y'all trade for Chandler Stephenson? Better contract, younger. I wouldn't.

I don't think this is even debatable. It's fact, and you've seen it throughout his career.
I absolutely think Kadri's current level of play would be desirable to a contender. The problem is most of them can't fit a $7M 2nd line centre in, or if they can it'd require them dumping salary elsewhere.
If Kadri wanted to leave, I think Conroy could do quite well in a trade if he were willing to eat $2M a year. I think it was Dreger who was saying on Barn Burner though that Kadri likes Calgary though, so it's likely not even a conversation that will happen.

Last 2 seasons:
Cozens: 201 GP, 48.4% xGF, 26 Goals, 67 points
Kadri: 203 GP, 50.9% xGF, 43 goals, 102 points
One of those guys is young and not actually worth $7M, one of those guys is old but is actually worth $7M...that's the difference.
If you're a team that wants to win a cup this season or next season then Kadri is a lot more valuable than Cozens.

I think you just need to take some salary back (if Kadri was willing to waive).
If a team like the Islanders was interested for example (Lou was interested when he was UFA) then you could take back a contract like Pageau or something like that ($5M).

Trade Andersson immediately for what? Any return? Or what is your bar for what type of deal needs to be on the table to make that trade?

Selling off everything to be crap is risky too. Chicago built a cup contender the first time around Kane and Toews but they look dire right now. Bedard is good but he's literally all they have, and he's a tier below generational (true generational like McDavid or Crosby/Ovechkin). They're gonna be in the dumpster for a while.

I see Chicago sort of like I see Montreal. Every season it seems like the media thinks Montreal is going to take a huge step but they don’t.
Bedard
Moore
Nazar
Korchinski
Levshunov is a solid start for Chicago if they all develop as expected. Still quite a few core pieces away though

They're only in year 3 of their rebuild though. They dealt Patrick Kane in February 2023.
Things look dire? They have insane amounts of salary cap, and just in the last 3 drafts:
7th Overall: Korchinski (D)
13th Overall: Nazar (C)
25th Overall: Rinzel (D)
39th Overall: Ludwinski (C)
57th Overall: Greene (C)
1st Overall: Bedard (C)
19th Overall: Moore (C)
35th Overall: Gajan (G)
44th Overall: Kantserov (W)
55th Overall: Misiak (C)
2nd Overall: Levshunov (D)
18th Overall: Boisvert (C)
27th Overall: Vanacker (W)
Things look dire? They friggin' should right now, but they won't for much longer. In a 3 year span, they've drafted what looks to be a #1 franchise centre, #1 defenceman, #2 defenceman + a bunch of other picks that likely result in top-6 forwards/top-4 defencemen.
If you think Chicago looks dire, or San Jose, then you are massively overestimating the improtance of being the 17th best team in the league.
I'd say after the 2025 draft, Chicago is going to get incredibly aggressive all over the place. Their asset base will be bursting, they've drafted the hardest to fill positions, and have enough salary cap space to do whatever they want.

Kadri is much more valuable than Cozens over the remaining term of his contract. He has a much higher likelihood of continuing out producing Cozens over the remainder of the contract. That alone should make him a more tradable asset.

The team that looks to be on the best track right now is actually San Jose.
They kept pieces like Hertl, Meier, Karlsson, Couture, Vlasic, etc out of the gate at the start of their rebuild, and then moved the pieces when their value was higher as opposed to just selling low, and it seems to have worked for them.
They actually even traded away two high picks one by accident (3rd overall that became Stuetzle for Karlsson), and one in a bit of a questionable trade (11th for 27, 34, 45.)
But other moves and being bad allowed them to get Celebrini, Dickinson, Smith, Musty, Askarov, and Eklund (plus others)
Flames were doing more this approach...but just happens to be that they somehow aren't a bottom 5 team like most people expected.

It's difficult to evaluate a team's performance based on hypotheticals that didn't happen. I could see a trade for Hanifin with an extension being a better value than what we got for him as a rental. The Lindholm extension offer IMO was a bit of a panic move because of the narrative that no one wanted to play/stay in Calgary. The bottom line is that it didn't happen, because Lindholm's camp wanted too much.
Andersson is another case that could go either way. You still need veterans that will teach and help your young stud prospects. I would prefer the Flames to trade Andersson, but I could see him and Weegar pairing up with a rookie each until said rookies develop and can run their own pairing.
Just look at the steps that Zary and Pospisil took thanks to Kadri. Look at how well Coronato is developing thanks to Backlund and Coleman. I think they would've developed much slower under different circumstances, like when Bennett and Jankowski were left to figure things out on their own line.
Personally, I don't think that anything's clear in regard to the direction of the team.
Maybe aside from several of our prospects playing better than anyone expected at this point.
