Also, depending on where your staying, bikeworks in queens marketplace in Waikoloa has a good fleet of rental bikes.

We’re staying in Mauna Lani, so have been looking at Bike Works for rentals.

Thanks for the suggestions, we’ll take a look at the ride past Kawaihae Road.

Afternoon commute was a mixed bag, Nose creek was cleared nicely but they had not cleared around the zoo and towards St. George's drive. However that section must have been done yesterday evening/night as it was cleared for my ride this morning. Everything is crazy icy though, yikes.

Yeah, I ate #### this morning on the ice. Inglewood bird sanctuary isn't plowed nor is Carburn to Glenmore bridge but if you go on the side with dog run it is plowed. Hopefully some sun will get rid of the super slick conditions

After years of probably running my studded tires at too high pressure I lowered them down to about 55-60psi for this mornings run, probably a contributing factor to me not eating $^%& in a few places this morning.

If they’re 38mm or wider you could probably go down to 40-45psi in the front.
That said this mornings ride from Edworthy into downtown had a huge amount of iciness. I was surprised NOT to see more splat marks. Was much better this evening coming home as most of the ice had some snow on top - what I can’t see simply doesn’t exist!! (Mostly true except one holy crap moment).

Ended up doing the ride yesterday. Started early so had great weather with hardly any wind.

Rented a Giant Defy w/ carbon rims & Di2 from BikeWorks. Loved the bike.

Such a great ride. Nice steady climbs and the coffee shop in Hawi was fantastic.

Thanks again for the suggestion Ryan.

Doing a ride on the Old Mamalahoa Highway and Waipio Lookout on Monday.

Nice! Where did you start from? Did you go past Hawi at all?

Turns out I’m going to be there for a day in a couple of weeks and am planning on doing the ride again.

Let me know about the ride you’re doing Monday.

For those who rode IN CALGARY today, just wondering how the paths are between Eau Claire and Edworthy?
Do I need the FB stud tires or will the skinny’s/gravel bike do?

We started from the harbor. We thought about riding to the Pololú lookout but my wife was bagged. After driving to the lookout another day (to do the hike) I’m glad we didn’t. My wife, while a decent cyclist, gets a little freaked out by narrow twisty roads.

We did the ride from Honokoa’a to Waipio Valley today. Actually I got my wife to drop me off at the start of Old Mamalahoa Highway and the.rode down to meet her at Tex Drive In. Highly recommend doing that if you can manage the logistics. Great ride, all downhill, through some cool forest. The ride from Tex Drive In to the lookout is fantastic as well. The climb back up to the drive in is a bitch but you can reward yourself with some great malasadas (Portuguese donuts).

27 days across Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. It's a supported bike trip, and one that I would describe a cross between a cycling and tourist trip. i can't wait!

This has also been my first winter of biking full time with no vehicle. I have been biking pretty much every day in Winnipeg including during storms (even to my indoor soccer games at night) and it's been great!
The bike trip was excellent. The first few weeks were in Vietnam. We started in Hanoi (biking through busy Hanoi streets seemed like a death wish at first) and worked our way down the country. Weather was wet and overcast for the first week in Northern Vietnam.

Midway through the trip, we biked up part of the Hai Van Pass, which was cold and wet on the way up. We got to the top and rode down the other side of the pass and the sky cleared, the sun shone and the descent felt like a game of Mario cart in real life as we finished the descent in the city of Da Nang. It was almost an emotional experience. From the point on, we were in tropical Vietnam with sunny skies and heat.

The 2nd leg of the trip began in Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) to Cambodia. We then travelled to the capital of Phnom Penh and then on to Siem Reap and the famous Angkor Wat temple complex.

After that, we rode in Thailand until ending in Bangkok.

Bikes were provided. In Vietnam, we used Giant hard tail mountain bikes, due to the rough road conditions. 100km on mountain bikes in the extreme head with a headwind was no joke! In Cambodia and Thailand we used Specialized hybrid bikes as the roads were better.

We had lots of rest stops with refreshments and would pull into small local restaurants for lunch, where they were ready for us, and then a hotel at night or a home stay. Our guides and mechanic were excellent. The Vietnam portion was a cycling trip with tourist activities, while the Ho-Chi-Minh to Bangkok portion was more tourist activities with biking.

I feel lucky to have ridden through so many awesome landscapes, small villages and met so many great local people.

In addition to the bike trip, I arrived early and did a 3 day motorcycle tour of the Ha-Giang Loop (mountain range in Northern Vietnam bordering China). It was the most magnificent scenery I have ever seen in my life and the highlight of my entire trip. I also spent an extra week in Southern Thailand checking out the Islands and beaches, which were also beautiful.

I lost a surprising amount of weight on the trip. The 6 pack of my early 20s returned. Also, for anyone thinking about booking a tour like this, many of the riders are older, retired age people (which I didn't know), so before booking tours in the future I call and ask the ages of the people who have already signed up. Obviously, the longer the tour, the more likely it is the other people are older due to more free time. It wasn't a big problem for me, but I prefer a mix of ages.

I am going to Kenya and Tanzania in January and was interested in cycling there but couldn't find a good tour to combine with a wildlife activities (no surprise) so................

Today I booked this 9 day cycling tour of Jordan for April. This will be my first time in the Middle East and I am very excited to visit such an interesting country and cycle while doing it.

Opposite to my direction of travel unfortunately, Eau Claire pathway from Peace bridge to centre street was still a mix of some hardpack, ice ruts, and clear bits.

My ride from downtown to Copperfield wasn't bad, but the Inglewood bird sanctuary part of the path was terrible. All sorts of ruts that had frozen over. Once I got past the train bridge it was fine.

Just wait till the snow melts this week and leaves the frozen ruts, it's actually ridable right now. Later in the week I have my doubts.

I overthunked (my copywriter word fyi) it and overplanned and overshot by doing the studded fat bike thing. Was surprised how clear the paths were. Still enjoyed humming along like a swarm of benevolent bees to and fro work. Will do the gravel bike Wednesday. Still seeing the odd ninja rider sans lighting.

Had my first wipeout of the season last night biking to indoor soccer. I hit a patch of ice and went down. No injuries no big deal. We had a big snow storm on Sunday and there's been a nasty combination of snow and ice which has been tough. (Winnipeg)

Today it was -42 with the wind on my morning commute and my chain froze and so I had to end up walking my bike for half of the ride.

Never ending adventures in winter biking!

Bumping thread from buried 3rd page...
Anyone know if the paths along the Bow River have been plowed and are reasonably clear for return to work on Monday? Been a few weeks off the commuter bike.

After my SE Asia bike trip last year, I enjoyed it so much that I booked a short 9 day cycling trip in Jordan for this April. Definitely less cycling than last time, but enough to keep me happy while visiting some incredibly cool places.

Please follow-up with a post-trip report. Tour seems like a good combination of tourist stuff and leisure riding. The photos of the bikes/riders however make me wonder about the bike quality and sizing for taller people (nothing is said elsewhere on the site). That said I'd love to learn more. Who did you go through for your SE Asia trip? Gotta do a cycling trip - was supposed to happen but instead Covid interrupted those plans (and many others).
