Brakes are determined by the car colour code. Obviously they need to know the specific shade of red you're driving.

Yeah, that's vehicle 101. I told him I looked into it and it's officially called "cherry red". But I held up cherries next to my car to be sure, and it's not really close. I suggested he enter it as "strawberry red" for accuracy as it's closer to that. He didn't answer, I assume it's because that sufficiently answered any further questions.

I think this was 1997. An older smarter version of me would have left the cab in the snowbank and tried for another cab. For the life of me I can't remember the name of the bar that most people went to on Saturday nights in those days.

House brand new in 2017 with a new furnace, motor goes in 2025. Seems like a short lifespan... at least my pipes didn't freeze though, I guess.

10 - 20 years expected. Not too far off. But definitely a pain. I had mine go about 2 months ago. 17 years.

Was the furnace repairable? I agree that I despise these newer technologies that don't have repairability or any lifespan. This planned obsolescence engineering with everything these days that is solely designed to screw consumers out of more money has become the biggest heist in history.
I got a Lennox furnace from the early 50's in a rental house. I can't even recall when the last service was or anything wrong. Whenever I have had ATCO Gas or other heating contractors out, they get excited to see these old ones. They burn more obviously but the overall costs of repair/replacement are far lower.

My furnace guy said that the early multi-stage furnaces are terribly unreliable. The stuff from the last few years is much better.

Yeah, the motor had to be replaced but the rest of it is still going. It just doesn't feel like my house is old at all, and yet I'm starting to get these things cropping up. Not a good time for expenses.

Look up the model number and serial number on the unit. There is a small chance that it still may be under warranty. It's a 7 year furnace and sometimes they have 10 year warranty plans. Warranty work doesn't pay a lot so sometimes contractors avoid filing claims.
As for the hot water tank, make sure it's been properly registered to the manufacturer as well and do whatever maintenance may be required.
If your are the stage where your appliances are going as well, stay away from the fancy/expensive stuff. They never last! For washer/dryers I love Huebsch/ Speedqueen. They are commercial grade, old school washers that last. If and when they break, they are 100% repairable. Literally designed to last 25+ years.

He didn’t mention a hot water tank or anything other than a furnace. If it’s just the motor it can be fixed easily enough.

The modern day stuff doesn't last. A 2017 hot water tank maybe 7-10 year lifespan depending on use and gas/electric.
What a lot of manufacturers do is come up with excuses for their garbage products like registration (default is manufactured date which is longer) or they ask if you've done maintenance on it and want proof.
It's still a gear grinder than all these companies and corporations are allowed to engineer products to break down at specific intervals and then provide little to no actual product support to justify robbing us all blind.

I am just questioning why you are bringing up a hot water tank that was never mentioned.
Anyway, your’s is a sweeping statement. Stuff still lasts if you properly maintain it and don’t buy the cheapest thing possible.
There has been crap made all the time. You’re just imagining the past through some rose-coloured glasses.

Have you had the heat exchanger inspected regularly? Cracked heat exchangers on old furnaces is a very common end mode of failure and it can lead to carbon monoxide in your house.

Hot water tanks have barely changed over the decades, flush tank annually, change anode every 5-7 years or buy a powered anode and the thing will last forever.

I think the multistage fan motors do have lower reliability then single stage motors.

Yeah, but the furnace is still reparable. It’s not like you buy a furnace and the whole thing needs to be replaced, which seems to be the gist of complaints.
