I've coached numerous tournaments, granted, not at this level, but you keep them together at almost all times.

You can give downtime, but you never, ever, sacrifice practice. Like KFF and others have said, it doesnt have to be bag-skates or laps or whatever, but you keep the team together, you work on this or that.

I remember after one tournament where we played in Calgary and my players all got to go home with their friends and families and were completely unfocused when they they came back I coached another tournament, in Calgary, and still put the kids up in Hotels.

Granted, that was an Elite team with a budget, but it meant that for the duration of that tournament, despite playing in your home-town, your teammates were all that mattered. You have all the time in the world to spend with your family. Later.

In the meantime? Theres a job to be done.

You can have downtime, together, but you focus on the job.

What is absurd is that this is common sense to us low level youth coaches, yet foreign to an NHL coach like Cameron at the highest level.

How do they not value practice? Right before a big knockout game? After already skipping a couple before?

The most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. Kids at that level almost never take days off. My son at Denver gets Sundays off because it’s often a travel-home day. Otherwise, they are lifting and skating as a team every day. With all the family, friends, fans, press and other distractions at a WJC, that’s even more reason to have them on the ice together every day. Unreal incompetence. I feel so sorry for those kids. These idiots ruined their dream.

Pretty much exactly what I said a few pages ago. This debacle is mostly on the coaching staff for never establishing an identity, or a consistent game plan. They didn't make adjustments in-game when needed, and applied a system that neutered the offense- forcing them to shoot from the perimeter, and never making changes to the PP. They didn't bother to try different combos on the forward lines or defence pairings that would establish chemistry.

This team was made up of 16 players aged 19yo, 6 players aged 18yo, and 3 future 1st-rounders.

There were 10 players already drafted by NHL teams in the 1st-round, 7 drafted in the 2nd-round, and 3 drafted in the 3rd-round.

This team consisted of the best D-man in the CHL (Dickinson), arguably the best player in the OHL (Martone), and the best player in the WHL (McKenna).

In addition, 2 players had time in the NHL this season.

This roster was good enough to win Gold. Like Tacoman said, these idiots ruined their dream. Flame away.

Yeah well let it be a lesson. Because the people who “know more” and are hired to do this- don’t. They don’t know more than the throngs of Canadians who watch the game religiously. Who know the game. The Dave Camerons and associated management of this team, don’t know more. They don’t know more than the majority of Canadians and they don’t know more than the obvious.

Like this is an easy job. Make it easy. Expect easy decisions. You should be able to hire a clerk from 7-11 to build this team and borderline coach it and that really is all that’s required because Canadians deliver the skill, talent and fortitude.

We need less Dave Cameron’s not more. Less thinking about it not more. More just looking at that stats and just picking those at the top of the heap. Stop rocket sciencing building with sticks and stones.

It’s super ####ing easy. Stop making it hard. You’ll win almost every time.
