We just don't have enough game breaking young talent coming into make a difference, we are likely to be much worse next season. We actually are bad this year, the record just doesn't indicate it thanks to Wolf.

Kadri and Backlund aren’t that good this year, and Wolf is still going to be here next year and get better. There’s no reason why they’ll be much worse than they are this yea, but maybe the 35+ guys get a little worse.

Add steps forward by some of the young guys, and likely a free agent signing (maybe one that doesn’t get injured immediately) and there’s plenty of reasons why they’ll very easily be the same, or even better.

Why people are considering Cozens for the Flames:
- Young centre with size and pedigree
- Flames system does not have a lot of centres in it
- Centres with size are considered a key element for building a competitor

Why Cozens is a bad bet:
- Mediocre production and play driving in the NHL to date
- Aside from his one notable season in 2022-23 — a season in which many Sabres experienced career-high offensive output — Cozens has struggled to score at even a moderately good rate in the NHL
- Big contract ($7.1M) until 29 years old. If he doesn’t improve, the contract is a terrible millstone. It was anchored against his 68-point season, which is a big outlier so far

This is a very long way of saying that Cozens profiles as a third-line player right now and not much else. His offensive production straddles the typical second- or third-line forward, and he does not have the defensive or two-way prowess to consistently play tough minutes

I didn't realize that Cozens had that kind of cap hit. It's not terrible for a 60-70 point player these days, but he hasn't been reaching that level of production lately.

Barring one outlier season, Cozens is probably a 40-50 pt centre, with decent plus minus on a terrible team - maybe he'd be a long term succession target for Backlund?

Before the cap raise, that contract would have been in salary dump territory probably about $2M more than it should be. Not so much now though.

Probably hearing of a trade but doesn’t understand why we are trading young players or pics for a mid level player to help for a playoff push.
