You’re getting a free brick (yeah, yeah your random family member’s donation 40 years ago, whatever). Stop complaining so much about it. I think City workers have better things to do than accommodate your picky schedule for taking your brick.

If you want the brick bad enough you will go down on one of those two days to get it. I’m just waiting for the design to be revealed on the new Olympic plaza. Tempering my expectations….i will fire bomb city hall if they don’t include a wading pool/fountains and ice skating rink in the new design!

That sounds...a bit extreme.

It’s a joke, but I will be disappointed if they don’t.

It's kind of ridiculous that they aren't delivering the bricks. The city has thousands of different vehicles all over the city every day, from garbage trucks to bylaw. How hard would it be to give each vehicle a dozen deliveries to make? For shame.

I'm optimistic about the new plaza. As long as they do as good of a job as they did with Devonian Gardens I think we'll all be happy.

Is that sarcasm? Devonian Gardens is so sterile now.

Yes, it was sarcasm, a twist of the tongue,
A green eggs and ham, a Seussical sung.
A playful deceit, a sly, mocking jest,
Where meaning's reversed, and the truth is suppressed.
So don't be so glum, though the words may seem grim,
For sarcasm's a game, a delightful whim.

Over 5,000 people requested their bricks and about 30% of those could not be saved: https://calgaryherald.com/news/one-t...-cant-be-saved
I'm surprised they had that many requests. I guess a lot more people were attached to their bricks than I would have thought.

So lemme get this straight.
36 years ago Calgary had it's biggest cultural event on a global stage. Probably never to be surpassed. They built Olympic plaza and allowed Calgary families to purchase and dedicate a brick to personally commemorate this event.
Then decided "f-it, pull out all those bricks" with almost no thought or consideration to the living cultural memory they were stomping on.
City heritage doesn't matter.
Family legacy doesn't matter.
At the last second due to public outcry, they slapdash it and say "you gotta prove it!", and then "you gotta come get it during x-mas vacation!" and give almost no notice of either.
It's just shortsighted governing by people who clearly give zero f-s about the community. All they care about are the developer contracts they signed to grease their political standing.
And yeah... it's been a homeless camp for 20 years. Not like anyone could have taken a brick while the city was mismanaging that side either...

To be fair, I think the initial deal was that your purchase was to financially support the games. A donation, if you will. Getting it back might be a bonus, but there should be no obligation on the cities part or demand from the people who donated.

I always assumed this is what is meant when you make a donation like this.
This is the reason why terms and conditions are needed these days to clarify what your donation actually entitles you to, not the actual brick until an asteroid strike destroys civilization.
That people actually believed they owned the physical bricks is weird.
Maybe what the City could have done is let you re-up your donation and put a dedication on a new brick or wall of some kind. The bending over backwards to appease a bunch of weirdos for a $19.88 one-time donation is dumb af.

Grabbed my brick this morning. Great process...the City did an awesome job with this. So happy to have this and thankful I remembered to bring a Ziploc bag for them to plunk it into. Still haven't touched it with my own hands yet.
The best part so far has been all the people who DGAF about the bricks complaining about every aspect of this. Love that I played a small part in bothering you. I would have paid $1988 for that pleasure let alone $19.88.

Come on. It’s dumb the City is entertaining this. They should have just people pry them out and use them as free labour. Whatever is done is done, I guess. I just find people being anything less than absolutely grateful they get them at all is annoying.
Anyway, please fill that ziplock with water. I am really interested in what colour that turns. Seriously make brick tea. I’ll give you or anybody that dares to sip it, $19.88.

Specifically to build Olympic Plaza.
It has become common over the years, but I believe the '88 Games were the first to have a central plaza with a nightly medal ceremony and other entertainment. I remember it being controversial at the time because people were mad that they were spending a lot of money on event tickets and wouldn't even be able to see the medals be presented at the event.
