Know Your Enemy

Utah lands in Calgary looking to find their footing in the New Year, having lost each of their last five games, including four straight in regulation.
Their most recent outing came two nights ago in Edmonton, where goals 20 seconds apart off the sticks of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Troy Stecher broke the game open for the hosts, as the Oilers came away with a 4-1 triumph.
“I liked our mindset in the game. I think we went to play the right way,” Utah coach Andre Tourigny told reporters after the contest. “We defended with a lot of pride, we were resilient all night long.
“Obviously, I don’t think we had the energy and the wheels to generate a lot of offence, but I loved the fight in our guys a lot.”
And part of that lack of energy was due to the absence of captain Clayton Keller, who leads the Utahns with 37 points on the season.

Utahns? Seriously? They're called Utahns? They sound like space aliens demanding to be taken to our leaders...

I posted it in another thread already, but I believe Huska is (correctly) sheltering Wolf, and to this point, it has worked pretty damn well.

This is Wolf's first full season in the NHL. Getting half the games sounds right to me. And most of his starts are at home, which is also to his benefit. Hard to argue with the success he's having.

And Huska deserves a lot of credit for it.

Those numbers are nuts, they are all over the place from game to game.

Right now, the Flames are 5 pts up on Utah with the same number of games played. If Utah wins in OT, they will still be 4 pts back, but both teams would have a 35% chance of the playoffs.

If Utah wins in regulation, they would still be 3 pts back of the Flames, but would have a 36.6% chance of playoffs, and the Flames would be at 31%.

And you can't blame different divisions because both teams are only looking at a wild card (and Utah would have more teams to climb in their division).

Those numbers are junk.

Possibly. I've just never seen a 10% swing on a game before.

A big part of Wolf's success so far this season has been because of the conservative deployment. This was probably a game the had Vladar scheduled to play and since his last game was good, there was no reason to deviate from that.

How do you know Wolf's success is due to his reduced workload? He's been carrying a starter's load playing 50+ games including playoffs for years.

There was a better reason to have Roman Turek share the net with Kipper in 2004. But then the Flames would have missed the playoffs. I just hope this platoon plan doesn't cost them the playoffs this year. The numbers don't lie.

No they don't. And what they are currently doing is working.

I'm not saying Wolf couldn't do it in the NHL as a rookie.

The Flames seem to feel that putting Wolf in a position to have individual success is more important for his growth than just starting as many games as possible. Whether Wolf could start more games, who knows. I have no doubt that he has benefited so far from the deployment strategy they are using though.

Vladar has started all 4 of the Flames back-to-back games this season. Eleven of Vladar's 18 starts have been against teams in the playoffs as opposed to Wolf's 7. Wolf has started 12 games at home as opposed to Vladar's 8.

Wolf is a fantastic young goalie, but I don't think he'd be having the same success rate without Vladar still taking the tougher assignments. I wouldn't be surprised if Wolf takes more games from him as the season progresses, but right now they both deserve to play.
