Yeah? I don't remember it like that. Certainly the first year with the Huberdeau trade and Kadri signing media was high on the Flames.

I literally just provided a link showing NHL page writers with the majority having them in a WC spot. Maybe you just missed the preview shows.

That's a far cry from the posters saying "nobody" had them as a possible playoff team. Most media in Huska's first season had them as a WC team or in the mix.

Here are what the SN group thought..
Quote:
Team most likely to exceed expectations
Elliotte Friedman: I'm beginning to think too many people are writing off Tampa Bay
Caroline Cameron: Buffalo
Christine Simpson: Montreal
Jeff Marek: Arizona
David Amber: Buffalo
Luke Fox: Calgary
Mark Spector: Calgary
Eric Francis: Buffalo
Wayne Scanlan: Ottawa
Eric Engels: Calgary
Iain MacIntyre: Arizona
Nick Kypreos: Buffalo
Justin Bourne: Calgary
Sonny Sachdeva: Pittsburgh
Sean Reynolds: Buffalo
Gene Principe: Ottawa
Ryan Dixon: Washington
Jason Bukala: Boston
Sam Cosentino: Buffalo
Rory Boylen: Calgary
|
Now...in order to exceed expectatations, they have to be low to begin with. So it appears not many were predicting good things for the Flames. shrug

Where is the discipline and self-control required to win this tournament? This is a Canadian team that hasn’t given up a single even-strength goal, but yet is struggling to win largely because it has given opponents multiple power-play opportunities every night. When you’re having trouble putting the puck in the net, that’s just a death wish.
It cost them dearly in the shootout loss to Latvia, and it cost them against the Americans, who scored three power-play goals. It simply doesn’t matter that the Canadian team has dominated every game in terms of shots on goal. They are shooting themselves in the foot, over and over, with bad penalties.

I found this piece in that article fairly telling:
Quote:
Cameron has 48 hours to hope his team will start playing for the emblem on their chest.
…
“It’s like touching a stove — they know if you take bad penalties you’re going to get burnt,” Cameron said after his team gave the Americans seven power plays. “They have to decide as a group ... that’s it.”
That’s an interesting perspective for a successful and experienced coach. He’s essentially saying he has limited influence over whether players demonstrate self-control.
|
Between him saying as a coach he has no influence and apparently isnt willing to even try (at least with how he’s presenting it to the media), coupled with the general way he’s rude to the media for asking him questions about the penalties, it simply appears that Cameron is in over his head and doesn’t know how to handle his role in this particular situation.

In a short tournament he probably doesn’t have much influence. Longer season of course he can start benching players, bringing up others from the minors ect. Pretty sure that’s what he’s getting at.
He’s correct that the players need to start making better decisions. The majority of the penalties are selfish ones. Like punches to the head or stuff after the whistle ect. That is on the player. Be smarter. Very selfish way to play.
Guess we’ll find out soon enough if they can figure it out. If they don’t it could be one of the worst canadian showings in the tournament history.

These short tournaments have been around a long time. It requires a different approach to adjust and adapt but the coach needs to be a part of that and this should be well understood. Although he’s not wrong in acknowledging the players need to make better decisions, it just seems like he’s letting them all drown while he’s describing the water. Even if he happens to be right and it’s widely understood, he should be standing with them, and he just doesn’t seem to be. At least from my view.

Its very odd, its like he's trying to distance himself from the players and place the blame solely on them. Yet he has the wrong lineup choices game after game and has yet to juggle the lines...
He's found a way to suck the creativity and skill out of Gavin McKenna... a guy who put up record points in the U18's just last year playing with Martone.
The guy is completely out to lunch and hopefully this is the last we see of him.
Bob Hartley him to Latvia/Russia, anywhere.

You could be right. But like anything we don’t see what’s going on behind the scenes.
I haven’t watched all of the games or paid attention to all of the media coverage. But from what I have they don’t really look like a team. I don’t think it’s a lack of talent. But as others have said they seem to play as individuals and lack discipline. Could be a combination of things. Lack of team building, wrong personalities, wrong combination of skill sets, coaching player discipline ect.
It takes a lot of different things to lose to Latvia.

Take this with a grain of salt but if it’s true I have no idea what the coaching staff is thinking. Dave Cameron says you can’t bench players in a short tournament like this, but you can cancel a ton of practices apparently.

That's actually really weird, it's a short tournament and you have to play a ton over the next week but you'd think you'd be having even pretty easy skates.

No need to work on special teams or test out new lines, that's on the players to figure out, right Dave?

Exactly, no bag skates or anything like that but maybe work on their power play systems / positioning. There’s lots that this team could be practicing during on ice sessions.
