Most people forget about HAWCS, especially because when it's following you, it stays far enough away that you can't easily see or hear it.
This case really seems to have been a no-win for the police.

I agree.
Again, despite the usual chuckleheads thinking otherwise, I wasn't making jokes. Thats exactly what I was saying.
The Cops basically had their hands tied and, as you said, essentially hoped that lack of chasing would make the driver 'not drive crazy.'
Its an awful situation. And I'm not normally a vindictive individual...but 5 minutes unsupervised with that driver? And maybe he didnt survive that collision afterall.

Not to mention the fact, the police in the Hawks helicopter would’ve absolutely seen what was going to happen then saw it happen.

I remember Constable Sonnenberg's death as a kid, we had just moved down south and we passed that spot on Deerfoot all the time. It always made me sad seeing his memorial there driving by it as a passenger or a driver. I know they've moved it now.
I think it was his family (sister?) that pushed for Calgary Police to get HAWCs in the first place wasn't it? It's been so long ago now.
EDIT:
The police did what they could without making it worse. No win scenario. Didn't chase him just followed. The waste of skin was always going to kill somebody going at those speeds and running red lights along a core street in the middle of city. Just a matter of who was just happened to be unlucky and in the way.

Ugh...its just 'no win.'
That driver must have been out of his goddamned mind. Why? I dont know.
But I can't blame the Police for this. I dont know what else they could have done.

Happened way too fast for any reasonable police response honestly. From what I understand, he robbed a pharmacy in Millrise, avoids a police stop, and within 20 minutes smashes up and in that time Hawks is following him. Was hawks already airborne?

Narcan has enabled a lot of ####ty people to continue on with their ####ty behaviour and it actively puts the person administering it in harms way. When you give it to someone who is ODing they almost immediately go into withdrawals and can become violent, I’ve seen this myself first hand and will never use it on someone again.

It sounds like he didn't even rob the pharmacy itself. He tried to enter a near-by gas station but the person their locked the door. He then went to the pharmacy, assaulted the staff member there, and stole their van. He didn't take any drugs or money from the store (at least from what I read).
So seems like he was indeed right out of his mind.

It’s also enabled families to get loved ones back. Not every addict is a piece of #### and not every piece of #### is irredeemable. I know good people who have lost kids to fentanyl via tainted recreational drugs, and I’d love to see you say to their faces that you wouldn’t have saved them if you had the chance.

Thanks DownInFlames. It is not simple. I just took delivery of 10 Narcan Inhalers Kits. I manage a Residence of young, supposedly smart, kids / adults. I will put on all my floors and also have the Needle kits.

I think that's directed at me, but that's not at all what you were saying when being accused of making jokes. You were, from my perspective, making light of the fact that this was a mini-van.

It wasn't directed specifically at you, and I wasn't making light of the fact that it was a mini-van.
Its just that mini-vans aren't designed to go that fast, that makes the whole thing even worse.
Again, because it'd take a van ages to get up to 180km/h, there really isn't that much runway on MacLeod, although if you ignore all the lights that becomes different, furthermore, at that speed the thing is likely to roll over if a sudden move is made at that speed and again, that is a heavily populated part of the City at all hours of the day.
It is a tragedy, I was just thinking of the logistics. Further to which, empathizing with the Police who really couldn't do anything without making the situation worse.
I was commenting about the mini-van, thats true, not because its funny or I think Vans are lame (I love mini-vans!) but because they have a high centre of gravity making them unstable especially at that speed, they have a lot of mass and they dont have the steering, suspension or braking capabilities, its not a race car, it essentially became an out of control wrecking ball.
Its not a joke. It would have been difficult to pick a worse scenario. The whole thing is a complete nightmare for all involved.
That thing, out of control, on MacLeod trail at that rate of speed? That was a tragedy waiting to happen.
And I feel for the little girl and her family, thats horrible and whats worse is...everything was out of control.
It reminds me of that drunk cement truck driver, you take anything with a significant amount of mass, add speed and introduce lack of control? I cant even imagine what the braking distance would be on a van at that speed, he couldnt have stopped on time if he wanted to. They're heavy and their brakes tend to suck.
I wasn't joking about anything, much less the mini-van, just pointing out the scenario. The only thing going to stop that vehicle with that mass at that speed was either something of equal or similar mass or, an immovable object and, trust me, I'd much rather he plowed into streetlight or something than another vehicle.
Anyways, I'd love more information, obviously we'll have to wait, but that guy had to be out of his mind.
I think its really rare to see this kind of scenario unfold with all of these elements that made the Police essentially helpless and result in the tragic death of a young girl.
I'll re-iterate, I'm pretty critical of Police fairly often, but I can't lay any blame at their feet on this one.
And I'm not a particularly vengeful person, but in this instance? If the Cops hauled him out of his Van and "whoops...he didn't make it" I think I'd be inclined to look the other way.

You're completely missing the point. Wormius is simply saying that not every topic, especially one about such tragedy, needs glib comment from Locke.

Man, the amount of "that's cool" without any links, explanations or context has seen a huge uptick this past week on CP. "Can't believe what so and so just said on the fan, wow" "What's happening to Musk right now is hilarious!" ""It seems Parek is having some fun on twitter, wow, hahaha!".
Like, just explain what is happening and maybe add a link, if you're posting about it on CP.
