Hearing that the 7/11 that was on McLeod closed because of rampant theft and abuse of the staff. We can't have good things if there's such little respect for our business and such weak enforcement. I don't know what the solution is, it seems desperate times coupled with the opioid epidemic have just made things worse.

Yup. Being a block away from the 39th Ave LRT station probably didn't help. Nearly every time I went past or into that 7/11, there were dodgy characters outside.

That was the only 7-11 I knew of that carried some spicy Japanese chips.. other ones have Japanese chips but not the spicy one

But yeah it was always a sketchy location.

Turns out, wage theft is an even bigger issue than those responsible for wage theft are trying to make retail theft out to be. Who’s going to be the first poster to propose breaking employers legs?

So casual and so brazen. Just a normal activity for so many people know. At least with the recent changes in the law there might be consequences to actions. It's barely a start but it'll take years just to swing things back to something more normal.

Who is going to punish that woman for those boots though?

Phew. Lucky you made it with the whataboutism in time. We might have had a string of on-topic posts otherwise.

First comment seems appropriate.

"If he got caught 6 times, imagine how many times he stole and didnt get caught."

Been released so many times just to repeat and abuse the process over and over again. Finally being held for once.

Maybe take a break from the doomscrolling. All you post is negative stuff, like literally all the time. Lighten up a little bit and go for a walk.

Can’t believe you had a whole year to come up with a response and that’s the best you could do.

I should point out that half the reason stores are suffering from a massive rise in theft is because they have fired as many of their staff as they can and put in cashier less tills, even the staff they do have are the cheapest minimum wage kids who have no investment in the shop at all to reduce the wage bill, it can take 5 minutes to find someone to ask for help in Home Depot

Costco on the other hand has staff everywhere, they are older better paid and Costco has little theft

I’m not so sure that’s the reason. There are many countries in the world that have moved to cashier less tills, and don’t have nearly the shoplifting problem that’s seen in certain U.S. states.

The issue is that in many cases, there is almost no consequence for shoplifting. Even if caught, they’re released on bail and just do it again, because whatever “punishment” is imposed on them is inconsequential.

In addition, a lot of the guidance from leadership at certain stores has suggested a “hands off” approach to shoplifting. Don’t try to stop them, essentially. There’s probably different reasons that companies have instituted these policies. Perhaps their legal counsel said it’s not worth risking their employees getting hurt, or potentially they don’t want the publicity of one of their employees chasing down a shoplifter down the street/mall and the situation escalating.

Hopefully, this new law in California will start to significantly reduce the instances of shoplifting. It’s crazy how far the pendulum had swung and how brazen shoplifters became.

They've also learned that the rich and powerful can get away with whatever the #### they want, so why should they bother following rules?

Excellent news. Quick actions after an initial change to the lax laws, hopefully more to come.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/holiday-c...231427158.html

Pre-Christmas shoplifting extravaganza is derailed for 117 would-be thieves, police say.

A statewide crackdown on retail crimes resulted in the arrest of at least 117 people in connection with the theft of nearly $40,000 in merchandise, according to authorities.

The California Highway Patrol and several other police departments carried out the operation on Dec. 20, resulting in the arrests of 117 people and recovering $38,000 in stolen merchandise, according to a news release from Gov. Gavin Newsom

Heard a podcast on organized shoplifting rings in the U.S., mostly in California where many stores ignore thefts under that $950 mark. Thieves know that so they go after the lesser values.
