You're right, probably not 6. But I would give some of them a puncher's chance at least to win a game against a top team. Texas certainly could have won the game yesterday.

I feel like we underrate how soft Texas resume actually is. Their best win is the same best win as Notre Dame has, away at A&M. In a four team playoff I think their resume would be more heavily scrutinised.

SMU was not "put in". SMU was the 8 seed, lost the conference title on a last second FG, and had less losses than Alabama while playing in a power 4 conference.

No 3 loss team deserves to be in a championship playoff period. The system has already made a mockery of the conference title and the season we don’t need teams that lose a quarter of their schedule wasting space for a title run.

For all this talk of Georgia separating themselves as the #2 contender, they sure looked beatable the last 2 weeks, and have a couple losses. Oregon is the only one who has really taken care of business all year.

Saban spent a lot of time whining about not being rewarded for scheduling tough out of conference teams, when Alabama's out of conference schedule is kind of a joke, and the only reason Clemson is not in a bye is because of their tougher OOC schedule.

Looking at number of losses in isolation is wrong IMO. SMU was never the 8th best team in the country, that seed was a gift.

IMO the biggest mockery is not fully bringing into account the strength of schedule. Look at the SOS of some of the at large teams.

Indiana: 67
ND: 57
SMU: 64
Boise: 78

The message is pretty clear that it’s much easier to be rewarded for a soft schedule. If you’re going to look at losses as some make or break metric, then you may as well invite Laval to the CFP.

THEY MET EVERY week, Bill Belichick and a handful of his former assistants with the New England Patriots. Matt Patricia, Michael Lombardi, Josh McDaniels, to name a few, men with whom he had won Super Bowls, all of them out of work. They'd chat over Zoom, and go through each NFL game, as they once did in Foxboro, as only they could. Teams. Trends. Salaries. Schematic shifts. Stuff only they knew to look for, questions only they knew to ask, a common language and way of thinking, once the envy of the NFL and beyond, from other sports to business schools, now valued less around the league. The subtext was unspoken, but understood: Which NFL teams might make a coaching change this year? And of those teams, which of them might be interested in a 72-year-old, eight-time Super Bowl champion? And of those teams, which would Belichick want most?

It reinforced and reaffirmed that there was another option out there. At first, the image of Belichick as a college coach made no sense. It was hard to picture Belichick sitting in a teenager's living room, in a hoodie with jagged sleeves, delivering his recruiting pitch. Nick Saban, one of Belichick's longest and closest friends, had retired from college football in large part because of the transfer portal and NIL. Tom Brady did an impression on television of Belichick last weekend: "Listen, you really wanna come here? We don't really want you anyway. I guess you could come. We'll figure out if you can play."

It was because, in the words of a confidant, Belichick is "disgusted" in what he believes the NFL had become.

Rich Rod back to W Va. after 17 years.

Former West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez is returning to the country roads where he experienced his greatest success as a head coach, with the school announcing he was rejoining the program Thursday.

Rodriguez, the current head coach at Jacksonville State, spent seven seasons at West Virginia (2001-07), which included three straight 10-win campaigns and a Sugar Bowl win over Georgia in 2006. He had West Virginia on the cusp of the Bowl Championship Series title game in his final year before an upset loss to Pittsburgh. After that loss, Rodriguez left for Michigan in a tense split, including a legal battle over his buyout.

We’ll see how the rest of these games go but I went in thinking they were not considering strength of schedule enough. Indiana looked like a 3 win SEC team.
