Default Flames prospects to be excited about

Ok you guys got me all excited about our prospects this year. Most I’ve been since Gaudreau I think.

Parekh being the one obvious one, almost same point pace as last year with a much worse team.

But then you have Luke Misa tearing it up and Mews as well.

Kerins goal scoring machine in the AHL, Cooley is what #1 in all AHL goaltending categories?

Brustevicz and Honzek with a bit slow starts in the AHL but starting to take off.

That’s not even saying anything about Basha and Battaglia who are also looking great. Some of these guys are going to be hitting for sure.

Who else am I missing to be really excited about? Grushnikov could be great too.

These guys and some of our young guys like Coronato, Zary, Wolf, Bahl, Pospisil are getting me excited about the future.

The team is really well set in every position but C. I think Misa will be a good #2 C if he keeps on his current path but we really need that high end #1C. Get that piece and the Flames are well set up to be a contender in 3-5 years.

I'm big on Aydar Suniev. Really pulling for that kid to make it.

The most intriguing "under-the-radar" guys to me are Mews, Suniev, Stromgren, Misa, and Jamieson.

Can anyone give some insight on him? I know the flames are high on him and several posters on this board. Can’t say I know much about him. Does he project to be a top six player? What are his strengths that could translate well to the NHL? Comparable players are always helpful.

I think Sam Morton can take Rooney’s spot as 4th line center
Solovyov and Kuznetzov can be our blue line depth

My 23-and-under top 10:

Wolf
Parekh
Zary
Coronato
Honzek
Brzustewicz
Pelletier
Gridin
Basha
Suniev

with honourable mentions to: Stromgren, Misa, Mews, Grushnikov, and Batagglia

and that still leaves quality prospects like Morin, Hurtig, Kerins, the goalies...

That’s right Solo is doing pretty well too and Stromgren still has a chance as he is stepping up in the AHL.

I wasn't a big Suniev fan in his draft year, as I didn't like what I was hearing about his skating, I didn't like the fact that he was playing in an inferior league, and I thought he was being propped up by his linemates-the Nadeau brothers.

It only took a few videos after he was drafted to see quite plainly that I was wrong, and so were the pundits. He skates just fine, and is a good player in his own right. He's a big power-forward who uses his size to drive the net, work his way inside and to win pucks. Best of all, he has an NHL-caliber shot, and according to his coach at UMass, he has an enormous drive to improve as a player in order to make the NHL. Stylistically, and stylistically only, he reminds me a poor man's Draisaitl- a very poor man's Draisaitl. I think he could make an excellent top-6 finisher if he continues on his current path.

Kuznetzov. Big seems to be doing better this year. Huge plus minus and some points

All of the above as well.

Kuznetzov?

Great big stay at home Dman who unless he is traded, should be a fixture on the blueline for years.

A lot of fans under rate/forget those kind of guys because there is no "flash" with them, but every single team needs them.

Thanks Sandman! Always appreciate your prospect insights. Huge asset to this board.

Would Jankowski be a comparable for Suniev then? Also played in an inferior league in his draft year but started to use his size in college and looked really promising. Also had an NHL-caliber shot. I know he didn’t reach the high ceiling many hoped for but would you consider them comparable prospects at the same age/development?

Battaglia will be a player. Really interesting prospect, and I think will become a fan favourite.

I like that you mentioned Jamieson. He's put up 14 points in the last 14 games, and is now tied for 20th in scoring by D (7th overall in plus/minus), with 32gp/7g/14a/21pts,+26, 29 PIM.

Of that list of under the radar players, I believe Mews shouldn't have been un-noticed to be included on said list.

I wanted them to take him with the Gridin pick. But, all is well as the Flames did extremely well drafting after the 1st in this previous draft.

I'm very excited about Mews and Battaglia and Basha. Of and Misa. Misa by default is under the radar because of his younger brother. The true #1 oa pick of the 25 draft.

He’s a beast around the net. Big body, hard to move, great hands in tight. Really excited about Battaglia

Thank YOU stemit! I think Janko was far more of a "finesse" player that relied on his skating moreso than his size. Suniev isn't as fast as Janko was, but I think his shot is much better. Suniev is more of a power winger who will lean into opponents to drive the net. I think the trajectories are similar, in that Suniev is really benefitting from the time he will use to develop in College, and the off-ice conditioning he will get- along with learning how to play a better defensive game, all of which Janko needed as well.

To me, Suniev looks a bit like Alex Killorn. Useful in his role, and could be part of a winning team and fill an important role, but not be the 'the guy'.
