Borgen's one of those guys who everyone who watches him closely (i.e. scouts) seems to think there's something there, that he has a ceiling. But this year has not made those people look very smart.

Kakko has a higher PPG this season, although Cozens has been better than Kakko the previous two seasons. Cozens makes 4.5 million dollars a year more and is signed forever. Have to think the Kadri contract is more appealing, it is a year shorter and you have more certainty with Nazem on what you will be getting for the remainder of the contract.
Saw this Kadri/ Cozens comparison in another thread which is just terrible. They’re over 10 years apart in age. More certainty with Kadri because will see a gradual decline for the next three years followed by a huge drop off. Not intended to derail the thread.

Drury gets a poor return in this deal just to prove a point. Really hard to believe this is the best he could get for a player who still has so much potential.

Seems like an underwhelming return. Not sure what Drury's plan is at this point.

Considering the offer that was accepted, I can't imagine that the Flames offered any more than Pelletier or Duerr and a 3rd. I wouldn't have wanted to trade Zary, Coronato, or Honzek for him, and nothing higher than a 3rd.

Out in Banff with Family but I too want to inquire.
I know the Flames called to see what the cost was weeks ago, but I’m not sure if they submitted any formal offers.

Will update when I hear.

On a personal note, I’m shocked this is all it took… seems like a low cost for a guy that could pop.
I do wonder if the words forced Drury’s hand in the sense that he just wanted him gone. The cost was rumoured to be a 1st just 3 weeks ago…

New coach this year. Things change. It's just my opinion. I don't think he is fringe like alot of ppl say.

15-17 is not a fringe guy either. 10-12 is fringe. 25 pts fringe. Maybe fringe top 4 yes.

For new york with Miller and lindgren needing contracts adds some depth. Do we have a borgen? I don't think so.

I dont really know anything about the player, but his statline seems distinctly unimpressive.

Makes you realize how tough it is to project these players when they are 17/18. So many players in this draft are disappointing compared to where they were drafted. Tough to plan to be bad for the “right” draft. So much luck is involved in getting the right top pick at the right moment. And then developing them properly.

Here's the tsn rankings for that year, where Hughes and Kakko were considered close.

https://www.tsn.ca/americans-set-to-...raft-1.1323878

They had Raphael Lavoie, Bobby Brink, Matt Robertson, Arthur Kaliyev, and Alex Vlasic as 1st rounders. Turcotte, Dach, Cozens, Zegras, Podkolzin, and Krebs all in the top 10.

I imagine it was no secret that Kakko was being shopped, so I do imagine that this was indeed the best price on the table for him league-wide (other than maybe dealing with direct rivals of course). Maybe Drury really likes and overvalues Borgen? Doubtful, but that's the only rationale to build on for selling him at such a discount.

I would have loved for the Flames to have made this deal, but it is obvious that they don't feel he was worth the investment. This is Kakko's 6th season, so maybe there isn't much more room to grow? Drury should have sold him last year, but that's always tough to sell such a high value former pick when they haven't blossomed.

I am ok with the Flames not being in on this. I am sure they scouted him and concluded that the price offered by Seattle and accepted by the Rangers was not worth beating to land Kakko, or else I am sure they would have beat him. Will be interesting to see how this trade ends up down the line - lots of these trades looking bad for the seller, only to then make the seller look very good. The Baertschi trade looked awful at first to many, but that was a great salvage of an asset by Treliving - definitely an astute move, even though the risk of sending him to a rival (which was even more glorious in hindsight).

With that being said, Seattle have only scored 2 more goals than the Rangers this season. Beniers is also a former 2nd overall pick who is 2 years young than Kakko, and only has 3 more points this season. Maybe they can find some synergy there together? Maybe it will be with Wright, who is tied with Kakko in points. Neither of these two young Cs have even come close to becoming who many thought that they were going to become (though definitely given their ages, they will be shown more patience yet). More reason to watch the Kraken play I guess to see how these kids do together. I don't expect a big change, but who knows?

This is a good trade for Seattle. Low cost for possible high upside.

The best players seem to be in the middle of the pack. No guarantees in the draft. Get as many picks as you can because it helps the odds. But I don’t think cratering your franchise is the best strategy.

I don't see what a slow, mediocre counting stats winger brings to the Flames. What do people think is going to pop about his game?
