Pretty much. Netflix picked up Cobra Kai in mid-2020, when people were looking for anything new to watch, so it became a decent success for them after most people missed it on YouTube Premium.
I recently started catching up on Cobra Kai and was surprised to see Will Smith's name as one of the producers, until I was reminded of the remake they did with Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith. I assume Will somehow got some control of the franchise then.

Let me get this straight...one of the children will win the All-Valley Tournament and then Will Smith will show up to present the award and then SLAP THE HELL out of the loser?
Because I'd watch for that.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.

And then it just degenerates into an all-out slap fight and at the end the final contestant is Chris Rock...because that guy can take a slap like a Champ!
Call me Hollywood...I've got all kinds of ideas!

Look, I love some Jackie Chan but holy hell....this cow has well and truly been milked dry!
I complain about Star Wars but...come ON!!! This is preposterous.
Did Ralph Machio win a lottery or something? Zero work since forever and now he's everywhere?
There hasn't been that much Karate Kid content, come on now. There was the Jackie Chan reboot movie in 2010 that didn't light the world on fire, and one TV show Cobra Kai, five seasons and ending in February. That's it in this century. With Cobra Kai re-igniting interest in the franchise and wrapping up soon, it makes sense they'd try another movie

Yeah, I dunno. As much as Will Smith is a bit of a pariah for the moment in Hollywood, I doubt you’ll see any Academy Award winning best actor do an episode of one of the hammiest, poorly acted series on Netflix unless there was a big, big cheque attached. I’d probably just give up acting. If that was the only option.

Just looked and Caleeb Pinkett, Jada's brother, is a producer on Cobra Kai too. Caleeb Pinkett somehow worked his way up from "additional crew" in MIB 3 to now producing.
But yes, Will Smith's production company, Overbrook Entertainment, owns the rights to Karate Kid now and bought them when he made the remake starring his son:

Quoting myself here but I just looked this up, it actually made $350M worldwide box office on a $40M budget, it was a pretty solid hit. It's remarkable in the age of sequels and franchises they actually waited this long to make another one.

I definitely had fun with the series for a few seasons, but only because of the ridiculous soap opera with the characters switching sides and guys from the movies returning. It was a guilty pleasure, and I haven't bothered to watch the last few seasons, as the whole thing got very repetitive.
Are fans of the series really going to sit through a more serious film? Pay to see that? And the budget is $100 million dollars? Sounds like they're trying to cash in on the nostalgia trend, hoping they can recreate what Top Gun or maybe even Twisters did.

It's because everyone found out fast that Jaden Smith sucks.
I like Xolo Mariduena, Payton List and some of the other "kids" on the show. Would be cool to see them and Zabka in this somehow. Would rather have seen them included than Macchio. Zabka deserves more credit for the resurgence than Macchio does.

As I recall, and this was obviously a long time ago, everything Jackie Chan does makes huge bank in China.

Yea, I have no issue with them trying another movie to capitalize on the success of Cobra Kai. That series has honestly been loads of fun, and I'm always up for more Karate Kid stories.
