I'm really surprised as well. They're trying to cram more Trek on TV while Disco is dying on the vine and they cancel one of the best Trek shows in recent years?
Picard was a fiasco, although I'll admit to enjoying parts of Season 3, STD goes without saying, but Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks have been hit after hit after hit.
Its just a guess based on absolutely nothing, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Paramount sunk a TON of their resources into Disco and now this joke of a Section 31 movie as well as the ongoing mission to discover new Trek Life in the form of another Kelvinverse movie that they cant keep both going.
Because while I like the idea of the Starfleet Academy show, thats a roll of the dice compared to already having a hit show on your hands.

Oh, is Section 31 just a movie? One and done? I guess we can be thankful for silver linings, then...

I believe so, yes. Which is kind of why I tendered that opinion.
My understanding was that it supposed to be a show of its own, then Disco got Disco-ntinued and then talks were heating up over another Kelvinverse movie all while this Starfleet Academy show were being considered...
At the same time though, I think a lot of the old Trek actors were willing to do Lower Decks as a call-back, a bit of a lark, just some fun! Can you keep that up? I have no idea.
I want a Lower Decks movie. If you're gonna go down, go down swinging! Put a capstone on that!

IMO the animated format is the special sauce for all the cameos. The former actors get a star trek payback, get to fan service a potentially lucrative fan loop again, and don't have to sit through makeup or don one of the famously ####ty alien apparel items made from old couches or something. But it's still trek!
I agree, blasty. I want more. I NEED MORE.
They could jump time frames and use this format very successfully. Show me lost era trek lower decks.

Could you imagine an Enterprise or TOS Lower Decks show? Theres Gold to be mined there!
Like Archer's Enterprise or Kirk's? When Starfleet was brand new and had no idea what they were doing?
Look at DS9 and, specifically, O'Brien! Nothing works properly and they're figuring it out as they go? The stories of those Lower Deckers would be hilarious!

Yeah, we'd be dealing with Riker and Troi trying to squeeze into their uniforms in the finale of Enterprise all over again.

Thats why you animate it! Did you see how fit and trim Riker was in Lower Decks?

I want a whole season following the life of that crewman who's brain got melted while he was sitting at the conn. His friends aboard, the flute solo he performed for Picard, love interests... ends with his brain melting.

I want it to be an ensemble, where every week there are two or 3 new actors replacing old actors.
Have one or two of them last the first season.
And never show the away missions. Just have it
Riker - "Ensign Ricky and Lt Tommy, with me we're going down to the planet of the erotic spider woman. Make sure you get your anti-egg laying in skull shots before we go. Ah the heck with it, we don't have time, lets go"
Then we never see them again.

Yeah, we need to see the room - and we know there's a room - where these guys sit and wait to be called on an away mission, praying their name doesn't get called.

I'm thinking more like a Bingo cage, you know the ones that you can rotate to mix them all up?
"And today the Red Shirt goes to....Leroy Jenkins!"

It would be like the Running Man "Oh, Ensign Jones did such a good job on that away mission that we retired him and sent him to Risa.... honest!"

Everyonce in a while you could have a two part episode when a red shirt comes back from a mission safe and sound and everyone on the red shirt deck celebrates and gains hope that they will meet their pension.
then at the end of the episode he gets crushed by a boulder.

Great show that never lost its consistency and story line.
I love how they took a cheap shot against Discovery with the destroyed Klingon ship reverting to the ridiculous Klingon's from discovery. A nice emotional ending.
