Obviously there's more to it, but of the top 7 American goal scorers so far this season, only 2 (Kyle Connor and Brady Tkachuk) are on the American team.
Why top 7? Because there's an 8-way tie for 8th.
Those not named? #1 Cole Caufield, tied for #2 Tage Thompson, and in a 4-way tie for 3rd with Tkachuk? Jack Roslovic, Stefan Noesen... and Adam Gaudette.

The Americans have a lot of talent. It’s amazing how much they’ve improved in the last 25-30 years. Close to being on par with Canada.

Once again...its almost as if a lot of Canadians were selected by American teams, carved their lives out there and then had children who....are American.

I don’t think this has been true for like… 20 years. Same as Czechs. Russia can be dangerous but consistently the best like the 4 countries in this tourney? Nah.

Of the Oiler "snubs" the only one with a real argument is Bouchard to me. Canada does tend to leave off offensive defenseman but I think the difference was in the past that D core was far more deep. When you're reaching for players like Parayko and Sanheim while still carrying around 34 year old Pietrangelo it's harder to justify. The roster maybe doesn't have the depth to be playing safe like that, but we'll see.
Hyman is a 1 year wonder. He doesn't make Team Canada #5 right now. RNH maybe makes Team Canada #3.

I think Dobson would be ahead of Bouchard there.

I agree to an extent, but I take Canada’s top three one hundred times over the Americans. There’s no one on Team USA that comes close to MacKinnon, Makar and McDavid (gross)
Those three have the ability to take a game over in best on best. I don’t think the states have anyone on that level

I think Dobson has been a bit disappointing this year. He might still be ahead of Bouchard, though.

Ya someone said in a video (TSN maybe?). It's pretty tough to bet against a team with those 4 players on it (Mackinnon, Makar, Crosby, McDavid). The 3 top centers and the best defenseman in the league aren't going to make it easy on anyone. Any of those 4 guys can completely take over a game and all of them can go head-to-head against any of the other team's top guys.

I think those highlight videos where Bouchard gives absolutely no effort in his own end, resulting in brutal goals against is what scared Team Canada from taking him. They already have top offensive guys. They need the bottom to be guys that aren't going to hurt them. Bouchard looks like a guy who could lose the tournament for them.

Exactly.
If you need a PP specialist, he's a good candidate. But they don't. They want guys that have a good 200-ft game at high speed. That ain't him.
On a similar vein, that's why I think they didn't choose Weegar - great all around defenseman, but he occasionally takes risks and causes turnovers. They don't need that kind of player, they need steady players. They want guys who aren't going to lose it for them, so they can then allow the big 4 win it for them.

3 Nations Cup. Seems like an awfully expensive way to solve our goaltending and world junior problems!

I think this is even more egregious than anything the World Juniors group did.

Yup, always having one of Mackinnon/McDavid/Crosby on the ice. Too bad Bergeron retired or that would probably be the best 1-4 centers ever to play on a team.

The NCAA development system is far superior to the Canadian Juniors development system. One gives you an advantage in and facilitates pursuing secondary education, the other asks you to forego secondary education for a long-shot chance you might end up as an NHL player.

I don't think education is really a factor in whether the NCAA or CHL is a better development league. The CHL has hundreds of players go onto play post-seconday hockey every year.

Outside of Makar I'd take the U.S. defense too.
Hughes, McAvoy, Fox, Werenski, Faber, Slavin, Hanifin,
Vs
Makar, Toews, Morrissey, Theodore, Pietrangelo, Sanheim, Parayko
Sanheim and Parayko weren't great picks IMO.
But nobody touches MacKinnon, McDavid, Crosby, Point as your 4 centers. (Although it's not like Eichel, Matthews, Hughes, Larkin, Miller is terrible)
If these guys take it seriously the Canada - US games should be a ton of fun.
