It's almost assuredly 100% AI, the music, the sounds, the text and the voice. And this is what is used to promote this project.

If you're promoting an AI data center/hub of course your gonna use a video made by AI. Gotta promote the capability of the technology.

In fairness if you click the link the video is actually from O'Leary's company
Here is the press release

A $70B data centre designed by someone who has never set foot in a data centre.

The AI works better if it can gaze out the wraparound windows onto a nice reflecting pond.
Who do you think provides a better representation of what a data centre looks like? Kevin O'Leary-led Vaporware Valley in Grande Prairie, or Google's project in the UK?

Where does the power for that come from? The province is already facing a power shortage if we end up building out the proposed carbon capture projects already on the books.

Combination disabled and EV charging spots? Now I've seen everything.

They say they'll build their own natural gas fired powerplants, 1GW at a time fired from "stranded" gas sources in the area. Apparently they have fibre up there, but I'd be surprised if it has the kind of capacity they would need to build this out.
And if you are wondering about the excess CO2 emissions, I wouldn't bother considering them, because they probably haven't either.

There's no chance in hell they have the fiber backbone up there to support something at this scale. If building up there was remotely feasible, someone like Switch would have already done it.

Sounds like a great opportunity to get some cheap land for O'Leary and build some subsidized power generation facilities which can then be tied into the grid later for $$$ when the the AI part of the project doesn't come to fruition.

The last hotel I stayed at in LA had handicap/EV stalls. Two were EV stalls and one was an EV/handicap stall. The front desk told me that I can park in the handicap spot if I was actively charging. It still felt wrong.

My n00b calculations are that distance alone adds +10ms latency vs a California datacenter.
I am not sure I am enjoying this episode of Yellowstone. I am just hoping the rancher ends up taking Kevin O'Leary to the train station.
EDIT: Also, can someone create an AI Video promoting a Monorail line from Fort McMurray to Edmonton?

Would it be better if our fiber optic cable had tidewater access?

Apparently this place isn't even in Grande Prairie, but actually 50 km south of GP.

The only place I would want to live less than Grande Prairie is 50 km south of Grande Prairie.

The other thing is that this is all so new (massive processing demand for "AI") that the techniques that bred it could easily be supplanted by others that are so efficient you don't need all this power and processing. Who's to say "this is what the next 20 years of AI demand looks like" and actually be correct?
And who's financing this? Mr Wonderful? Anyone else? I predict we give up a lot of money and tax breaks before this kinda fizzles away.
|
I’d argue we’ve never seen the need for computing power drop. Unless you get biological hardware I don’t see the world hitting a limit for demand. But most of the insides of data centers get upgraded over time to expand computing power to latest tech.
Sounds like a dumb thing to subsidize as it creates nothing but remote construction jobs and you’d be better off pipelining the gas to an area with lower construction costs.
