IT's not just the annual amount of the contract, but the extra luxury tax it will push the Mets into. Per Wikipedia, the Mets paid $100 million in luxury tax in 2023.
But at some point, I guess the money just doesn't matter to the owner.

They had 16 million is Lux space before the signing.
But they have a lot of holes left - 1B and Pitching

His strikeouts declined over time from what I've read, but his WHIP is elite. Hopefully monster isn't too monster, but a 5 year deal for an elite pitcher is a worthwhile gamble.

the problem is there's no salary floor, the little owners will just take that luxury tax money and pocket it.

I’m not the huge Romano fan but as a set up man I truly think that’s a good idea. No idea what his health is like but man I’d have taken that gamble.

Crikey. I know it's not my money, and it would have been cool to see Soto in a Jays uniform for a few years, but 3/4 of a billion seems kinda insane.

Couple days ago there was chatter that Teo was about to re-up with the Ddogers, but that still hasn't happened. Now there is chatter that he's close to a deal with the Yankees.
That's just ####ing gross man.

These massive free agent deals from these big markets are a good reminder of how the NHL would have looked had they not secured a hard salary cap. A cap has its share of frustrations but I will take that over a select amount of teams that can throw money around like candy.

Rumblings that the Jays went to 15/750M on Soto.

It may not be any of our money, but when he inevitably gets injured and he's either dead weight or not performing to the salary paid and you have to live with him on the team vs the team signing numerous others, it'll affect you as a fan. I'm super glad the Jays didn't get caught with a contract like that. Imagine paying him until 41? To me it's no different than ARod or Griffey in their primes. Arguably those were more versatile players too. Unless Soto really takes his conditioning seriously, there's a very good chance within 5 years he tweaks something and it becomes a nagging injury. It happens to the best of them. Anything beyond 7 years is an unnecessary gamble.

So grateful to be turned down by a superstar 2 years in a row. Amazing honor. Just happy to be here.

In any case, as much as these guys are getting on my nerves, I’m more curious about their trades and their outlook on bringing up the basement on this team. Too many positions have anemic offence. Gotta trade an asset or two to field a solid lineup more than taking the lazy route and signing guys.

Gratefull for the bottle of wine that Boras sends him for getting Cohen to shell out 51 million a year.
Really it's like selling your mulligans in golf to the other guys in your 4-some. You're the worst player and can't win even if you use your 2 mulligans. So sell them to the other guys for a beer each so you get something of value for something that really doesn't exist or help you actually win.

They went to the Dodgers and Mets . It’s not like the Jays lost out to scrub teams in the bidding
I do think long term this helps them with Boras clients . It does show they are serious even when losing
I hate almost everything Atkins does but these were legitimately serious pursuits of superstars .
The Yankees and Red Sox also missed out on both of these generational players
