I can see the argument. I don’t think it’s absurd.

How would the owner in Ottawa know what information a columnist in NY is "being fed" from...well....anyone?
And how is it "tampering" even if someone in the front office said "hey Brooksie, Drury called the Sens and asked if Tkachuk was available"?
I mean...its tampering now for a GM to call another GM and propose wanting/making a deal? One GM can no longer covet a player on another team and tell someone else that?
Im limited right now but this is all i could find in a quick search

The NHL's tampering rules are intended to keep the playing field level. The rules prohibit the following activities during the playing season:
Recruiting or tampering with players, coaches, or managers
Discussing pending unrestricted free agents (UFAs) with them before July 1

Stating a team likes a player or called on a player in a newspaper column is certainly not recruiting him, and he is niether a UFA nor RFA so that cannot apply.
Brooks has done this for decades. He says things that he thinks should happen for his beloved Rangers team. (Anyone remember the suggestion to offer sheet Iginla back in the day?)
He doesn't work for them however (though would not be surprised to find out he receives a stipend from the PA) and they simply cannot be responsible for what he decides to write.
