One thing I do is always to contemplate disposal in 6 months and how that might look like. It's stopped me from many dumb purchases, but not all.
Disposal being what I'd get selling it and the headache I'd have if I didn't use it, gifting it to someone I know or throwing it away/donating it. Usually that thought stops me (or at least slows me) from getting stuff that's borderline. I know there's some crazy Kijiji vagrants out there, so the line between gifting/free pick up and junking is whether a friend of mine would be happy to have it or would think I'm leaving junk at their place.
Stuff that doesn't need disposal after 6 months is obviously just pure bonus/gravy. It doesn't slow me down too much because my parents have a ton of ####ty quality stuff at home they refuse to upgrade themselves. I upgrade mine, they upgrade theirs too. It started with phones and then it kept going to things like tools, charging cables, power banks, kitchen stuff, old networking gear etc. Basically I started getting tired of going over, needing to help fix something and realizing there was nothing at hand to help do it, so going back home to grab stuff to help was a royal pain in the ass.
This past year I also committed to purging excess junk. Holy hell. In the last year, I swear I gifted nearly the volume of an entire 12' x 12' room floor to ceiling of stuff (bed frame, mattresses, extra furniture, supplies, utensils, kid clothes, building materials, rugs, toys, mismatched plates/bowls due to half broken etc.) and it still seems like I barely dented anything. But the new immigrants, new to Calgary + nothing in house etc. people were happy to get it for free.
"Holy ####, these plates and dishes are pretty nice."
"You'll see that the numbers are all messed up due to many being broken. We changed to a different style that's easier to purchase replacements that match."
"My stuff is all mismatched anyways and this is still a huge upgrade to the stuff I had before."
"

win-win!"
