If the outcome is rehabilitation, that’s what is being achieved.
It's awfully nice that a violent criminal gets to turn around his life while an incident man is dead and his family grieves. But at least a druggy gets treatment and maybe a new life after this.

Don’t you think referring to the perpetrator as a “druggy” is a little demeaning to the victim as well?

You’re right, they should just shoot him in the head to make it right.

Excellent take.

What we need is equal sentencing for equal crimes. A non-indigenous offender gets significantly more severe justice whereas the Gladue Report guarantees much more leniency and alternative sentencing approaches.

In a not too dissimilar case in Langley a couple years ago a homeless man was sentences to 5 years for killing someone when an argument and altercation occurred. In that case the offender was found to have expressed remorse, had no criminal record and had a history of drug use. No offer of rehabilitation and betterment for that guy though.

I have good news for you then, pretty much anyone can claim some bull#### native ancestry and get a Gladue, I have a kid from Peru going in for sentencing next week who has one based on a make believe grandmother who survived Residential School, of course she survived, she was in Peru, a thousand miles away from Residential School

Equal sentencing for equal crimes isn’t reality even outside of anything gladue related so I’m not sure why you’re pretending that’s your issue. Sentences for the same crimes differ widely based on the context of the crime and the history of the individual (regardless of race), which is why even when someone pleads guilty there will be one side arguing for a harsher punishment and another arguing for a more lenient one.

Is your preference that nobody be rehabilitated or given an opportunity for betterment? Or is your issue that everybody should be? in which case complaining about this sentencing seems bizarre.

The circumstances surrounding the killing and the accused were also factors that led to the sentencing in the Langley case, by the way, which is why the accused got a much lighter sentence than the prosecution was asking for, but also why it wasn’t nothing.

Manslaughter can carry a sentence of no jail time to life in prison. “Equal sentencing for equal crimes” makes you feel better though? Life for everyone?

Yeah pretty scary.

Was right downtown on Hamilton and Georgia.

Today's incident wasn't far from an incident last week when someone was randomly sucker punched while waiting for a bus with a good number of other people around.

Was just at my new gym down the block right after the incident. The stats still say things are getting safer?

Saw the video of the police arriving and shooting him.
He had a female blocked in behind the cash register; thankfully the VPD got there on time.

This was seemed especially brazen. The guy didn't appear to be in a psychotic state. He was engaging with people as he went along on his crime spree.

Turns out my good friend ran into the guy outside the 7-11 and had to chase him away from some woman he was harassing. He didn't know that the guy had just stabbed someone else. He was walking around with liquor bottles he had stolen from a nearby bar that still had the pour spouts on them.

Did they shake his hand and then let him go like they usually do?

In all seriousness I dont know all the details, but if you're walking about town engaging in casual gunplay then this is always the likely result.

It'd be interesting to know 'why' he did what he did because on the scarce information I've seen? It kinda looks like 'Suicide via Cop.'

But I genuinely dont know.

I saw a social media post right after with some dude saying that the Vancouver police "just shot a homeless man" with no context or anything about what happened. It was like they were trying to cause an uproar for no reason.

No one is buying that. This is a pretty well publicized case. Every comment I see on Twitter and Reddit is criticizing the justice system for letting this guy out to stab people.

Did the police officers follow proper procedure? I don't know enough about the details, but its far from the police executing a homeless man.
