Andersson (50% retained)
Vladar
To Calgary:
2025 1st round pick (top 5 protected)
Ritchie
Georgiev
Instead of getting a 2nd or 3rd round pick for Vladar and a 1st round pick + 2nd round pick + B-level prospect for Andersson in separate trades, they get a 1st round pick + A-level prospect (Ritchie) in a single trade of both players. This trade targets quality instead of quantity which I think is a smart move. Colorado helps both their defensive game and their goaltending in a single trade. It’s an all in love from Colorado who is in the thick of their window to win championships.

If you are only getting a 1st and a 2nd a B level prospect for a 2.27 million a year Anderson you are doing it wrong imo. No need to retain if that is all you are getting considering Georgiev has negative value.
Hronek who was definitely worse than Anderson and made 4.4 million at the time under a lower cap got a 17th overall pick and a 2nd. At the time of the trade the Red Wings were getting a pick that likely would have been between 13-20 (the islanders were out of the playoffs at the time) in a deep draft or if it ended up being a top 12 pick an unprotected 2024 1st and a 2nd.

Who thinks that?
The trade was a 1st and a 2nd a B level prospect for a 2.27 million a year Anderson. Ritchie was not even in the trade.

Must have been ghost edited because he's in the trade you quoted

Don’t think he’s saying Ritchie is a B level prospect. He’s responding to me saying Andersson on his own might only return a 1st + 2nd + B-level prospect. Where as combining a retained Andersson with Vladar while taking back a salary dump should return an A-level prospect like Ritchie + 1st round pick.

And it's not like Vladars been playing badly. We should not try to diminish a players current level of play just because he's only played a certain amount of games.

Perhaps but for the Av’s to give up a first, which looks like a 2026, and their best prospect in a trade that still leaves them with a big question in net is a hell of a price to pay.
I would sooner just trade the first, alone, for Blackwood who is the same age, had previously shown to be able to play at the same, or better level, has more than twice the amount of NHL starts, and is basically at the same cap hit.

It is the Flames way: we end up paying at the peak, giving up a 1st for a year of Monahan, then are sitting on a giant pile of space, just when the price drops. The Flames are cursed. They have always been cursed. They will forever be cursed. It is our fate.

They're not cursed, we've just had lots of poor management that has always prioritized the fastest lane to playoff revenue.

I dont think andersson is a big need for the avs. Can't see them selling the farm for him and vladar.

Yeah, Colorado is pretty set in their top 4. The only reason Malinski is playing so much is because of the injury to Manson. They could use some more depth at D, but their not really in the market for a minute muncher like Anderson.
If there is an Anderson sweepstakes, look at Buffalo, Detroit, Florida, and Nashville to be involved.

Anyone that's ever had a single interaction with CNRL should know it's ownership.
Now in a fungible commodity business where lowest cost wins, they're a fantastic business. Add competition and choice for discretionary incomes, well not so much. Add an environment where you have to invest in people and technology to beat 31 other organizations with similar goals and framework to work in...well again you're coming up short.
Calgary really does deserve a better owner, they just don't know it yet.

I assume Vladar will be moved, but I doubt it is to Colorado now. They made their move in net already. They brought in Wedgewood simply to help Georgiev along. Now, if things continue for them poorly in net (or worsen), then I guess they make another move. It just seems that if they were going to go after Vladar, it would have happened before Wedgewood. To bring in both doesn't make much sense to me. There are (and probably will be) other teams in need of goaltending towards the deadline that are just out of it, or teams that are in it get an injury to one of their two roster goalies, and don't trust the depth option enough. I imagine that the Oilers are going to dip into the goalie market, so that makes at least one team driving up the price. Carolina probably. There may be more. Maybe Conroy just asks someone every game to run the opposing goalie? Ok, that's not very funny.
As for 'weaponizing cap space' - It falls apart next season, for sure. However, there will be teams this deadline that are going to be right up against the cap. Hopefully Conroy can act as a broker for a couple of teams, or even just acquire a cap dump for a sweetener. Beyond this season - there may be opportunities with teams who have owners who don't want to pay certain deals, but I imagine that they will be exceedingly rare and on the cheap anyway.

On the topic of weaponizing cap space… it’s true that there is going to be a lot of growth in the salary cap the next few years so the value of cap space may not be as high as it has in the last 3-4 years. However, in the hilarious scenario where McDavid does not re-sign with the oilers - can anyone think of a team that might have a legit shot at signing him but would need to offload a contract or two to make room for say $18 million AAV?
Who could be seen as teams that could realistically have a chance at him? Obviously Calgary won’t be one but it would be hilarious if they helped another team clear space for McDavid in that scenario. Problem Calgary would have is that they are likely on the no trade list of any bad contract that other teams would look to unload.
I would think the following teams could have a decent chance to sign McDavid if he reaches free agency in 2026: Toronto, Chicago, LA, Vegas, Florida, New York, New Jersey and Dallas. There might be others but those are all teams that players tend to prefer to sign with and are mostly competitive teams with a decent chance of winning/being competitive for the next few years. Can’t think of many contracts that any of them have that would be considered bad enough to need offloading though - at least none that would still be in effect by the time McDavid would sign with them in the 2026 offseason.

I do know someone at CNRL and this seems consistent with the impression I’ve been left with. I think it’s pretty clear it’s ownership.

My company was a supplier to CNRL, their standard supplier contract said that they never had to pay any invoices.

Peak flames was pretty solid. I mean, Tkachuk breaks his hand, Monahan injury, Bennett didn't come anywhere close to panning out and Markstrom #### the bed. The flames could have been a bit more patient, but they were also super unlucky with how it all panned out. And then the Johnny and Tkachuk left for personal reasons and a premature rebuild is the end result. If they hadn't left, the team probably gets a few more seasons of being a top contending team.
