Oh - he was born in Canada but I forgot he’s entitled to play for Sweden. Of course he played his pre NHL all in Sweden.

I might be wrong but he has duo citizenship, Sweden and Canada, so he can pick and choose which he represent? It's like Brett Hull back in the days, he has duo, Canada and USA and he chose to represent USA.

Once you play for a country at a sanctioned event, you cannot change again IIRC

Nylander has already played for sweden as a junior.

Juniors doesn’t matter so much.

Former Flames Nigel Dawes and Dustin Boyd played for Canada in junior but played for Kazakhstan at the senior level while Hnat Domenichelli would play for Switzerland.

There are pathways at senior as well

Who could forget good Canadian kid Petr Nedved, 1994 Olympic silver medallist, getting to defect to the Czechs as a 40 year old.

Nabokov got to play for Russia eventually as well after representing Kazakhstan early in his career.

Afaik you can switch once but you need to have been playing in the country you switch to for two years

That is the case, however this is NOT IIHF sanctioned but simply an NHL/ NHLPA event so that rule does not matter. This was addressed by Friedman an the latest 32 thoughts podcast, although he was not speaking specifically of Nylander, just this rule. Apparently you for this event you need a passport for the country you are representing.

Interesting that we’re seeing the same complaints from fans about the projected rosters for the Canadian Junior, Canadian Four Nations, and U.S. Four Nations teams - talented stars being left off the rosters.

The explanation could be that the dozen or so GMs and coaches responsible for the choices are all stupid. Alternatively, they’re not building all-star teams, they’re building out rosters to fit roles. Scoring lines, checking lines, PK specialists, etc.

I guess we’ll see if the strategy is more effective than just taking the most talented, highest-scoring players available and putting them together on the ice.

Team Canada tried that crap in Turin and embarrassed themselves.

Then they went back to taking the best players and have won Gold ever since. The best players in the country should be representing it, they know what's on the line and have the willingness/ability to play roles if necessary.

They almost ####ed it up in Vancouver. Babcock and his massive ego needed to get checked to get the team right. He was trying to embarrass Iginla the entire tournament.

regarding switching team allegiances, there was all kinds of wackiness in the 80s, Tony Esposito played for US in 81 (after being on the 72 Summit team), then Trottier was on the US in 84 yet Stastny was on team Canada

The World Cup in Summer 2004 was similar to this, being non sanctioned.

Was it Deadmarsh that decided to play for the US. Hull could've played for either team too. Tkachuk as well (Keith). Could be wrong.

Do we think Bennett is gonna run around crushing souls at 110%? Or is he going to try and stay healthy for another cup run?

Ill watch cause there won’t be other hockey on… but this 4 team exhibition is a sham.

This. Iginla saved that gold medal for Canada grinding out against two players in the corner to get the puck to Sid. Sid should be talking Iggy up for the rest of his life whenever someone asks him about that goal.

Babcock was barely giving Iginla ice time but Iggy battled like he always did in every shift he got. Couldn’t stand Babcock then and am glad he has been exposed as a terrible coach.

Goalie maybe, they are stacked eveywhere else. Best centers in the tournament, best dman.

Canada is the favourite

This sham is the equivalent of the NBA cup don’t think many care who wins or will celebrate. Maybe McDavid will come with champagne like LeBron and clown himself.

But after watching that Columbus game tonight, we really are in the darkest timeline.

Just think what some patience and mutual respect contract wise could have broughten us.

Tkachuk, Bennett, Gaudreau, Monahan.

It’s just a giant all star game with the people in charge of the picking getting to name a few of their friends to the list.

That’s it, that’s all, that’s that.
