I know a player who played for Cameron. They would never practice the PP, and Cameron's philosophy was "Get pucks to the net, and whack away". You guessed right, that teams PP was awful that year.

Is he actually the coach? Yikes. A deeply religious old school guy with a big temper (or so I've heard). Stunned we haven't heard of him hitting any players yet and seemingly an on brand choice for Hockey Canada

he is on pace for 93 points which would be the best D-man in the OHL most years, but Sam Dickinson is having an insane year, on pace for 120+

I doubt it’s anything to do with talent. Nobody doubts how talented Parekh is. They’re building a team to win a tournament in the here and now. Experience and defensive reliability are going to weigh heavily in their decisions.

I've always felt icing a checking line over four equivalent 1st lines/defensive pairs in a short elimination round robin tournament where anything can happen has never made sense.

Other nations can't match that. Let skill win out.

As for Parekh, I suppose being a top 10 NHL draft pick, the reigning CHL defensemen of the year, a Memorial cup champion, and a Hlinka winner wasn't enough to warrant getting a camp invite over the elite skillsets that the likes of Cam Allen, Beau Akey, Harrison Brunicke, and Andrew Gibson bring as the right handed defensemen on the roster.

If he was picking a favourite from his team though, why not take Mews? Kid has also been dynamite this year.

And just make some offensive guys play defence. They can do it - they usually just aren't called on to do it. A lot of them turn into huge defensive players anyway - see Bergeron.

Sometimes I do wonder why management/coaches can get so in their own heads. The problem Canada has had lately is a combination of goaltending (still a problem this year) and not bringing the most talented players possible. While there are definitely exceptions… it’s superstar talent that can win short tournaments like this. Parekh not getting an invite at all is a very strange choice. Like others said - if he doesn’t have a good camp then he doesn’t make the team.

If it’s true what was said above about Cameron not prioritizing the powerplay, then that might be why he left Parekh off the invite list. Which is a terrible reason especially for a tournament like this. Also, Parekh produces fantastic numbers at even strength so it’s not like he is just a powerplay specialist.

I doubt any NHL teams uses the omission from the WJC roster is an indication of where to draft a player.

If he slides to Calgary (wherever they may draft), its because teams feel his NHL potential is less than we think. Unless, of course, we win the lottery and draft 1-2.

It's crazy...I could see inviting one more defensive RH d-man...but look at the right side.

Olivier Bonk - Returning player, plays with Dickinson - so he's a lock.

But then you have.

Cameron Allen: 31 points in 49 games over the past two seasons (only played 24 games last year)

Beau Akey: 25 points in 36 games over the past two seasons (only played 14 games last year)

Andrew Gibson: 51 points in 91 games over the past two seasons.

Harrison Brunicke: 33 points in 64 games the past two seasons.

And you leave the reigning OHL Defenseman of the year, who led his team in ice time on the way to the Memorial Cup victory, at home to take all 4 of those guys. You leave the guy with 41 goals and 126 points in his last 88 games at home.

I could see it if maybe Parekh hadn't shown he could contribute on a winning team, but he was probably the best player on the team that won the Memorial Cup. This is big brain, overthinking it decision making if I've ever seen it.
