Trump tariffs are just a hypothetical, but Bidens Tariffs announced in May 2024 are coming down the pipe, so that must be what they are "worried" about. Probably just uniformed business owners lol.

Following an in-depth review by the United States Trade Representative, President Biden is taking action to protect American workers and American companies from China’s unfair trade practices. To encourage China to eliminate its unfair trade practices regarding technology transfer, intellectual property, and innovation, the President is directing increases in tariffs across strategic sectors such as steel and aluminum, semiconductors, electric vehicles, batteries, critical minerals, solar cells, ship-to-shore cranes, and medical products.
A nice loooooong list

The tariffs Trump has proposed. You know, the ones against goods originating in Canada, Mexico, and China? It says so in the article. It wasn’t very long and there weren’t any difficult words if you wanted to try to read it.

Or were you doing a thing where you pretend to be like “which tariffs? I’m confused!” just so you can talk about Biden’s tariffs because someone was talking about your boy in a way you didn’t like.

Extra lol at calling executives at major companies “uninformed business owners.”

Ummm, 25% tariffs on everything from Canada would raise prices significantly. In fact, the tariffs on Chinese products raise prices for Americans too, but they feel there are national security reasons that override the increased costs.

I'm genuinely interested in how companies paying an extra 25% tax on inputs would not raise costs...

Unfortunately businesses can’t just shrug their shoulders and hope the next president is lying about something he’s said he’s going to do multiple times in the last month, they actually have to plan their next year!

Not sure why anyone bothers replying to the Melbridgeman types. They’re too far gone.

What this will probably do is force many to make major purchases before the year is over, as the tariffs are likely to be prohibitive to many Americans making significant purchases once they are installed.

Get ready for the most profitable 4th quarter ever! Followed by an economic recession. *frowny face*

Not a dark skinned person in sight, just how Jesus envisioned America.

Yes, I'm intentionally ignoring the rest of that unsettling image.

The best part of Couch ####er's tweet is that basically the vast majority of relevant and major U.S. cities know better.

I think a 25% tariff is and will be devastating for business and consumers on both sides of the border. I do think this is a negotiating ploy in a lot of ways but I also think some level of additional import tariff's will remain on a large segment of imported goods.

The revenue that would be raised would be very large but this could be offset by tax cuts on individuals and business. It could lead to some sizeable job gains in manufacturing. A lot of things can still be made in America, albeit at higher costs but perhaps with a higher level of overall value to the country/consumer? A lot of things just can't and won't be made in America and that is the way it is.

We will know more in a few months how things play out and it may not be until way into the future if SOME aspect of this policy worked out.

If we look at Japanese auto makers, the overwhelming majority of cars sold were made in Japan and subjected to tariff's. It is not conceivable to think of Honda, Toyota and other's not having the level of manufacturing and business presence they do now in the USA.

And that's a good thing for American productivity. Not having to make their own t-shirts frees up their labour to do more banking, more invention, more R&D, etc.

I agree but there is a very large population base of people who can't and won't be able to do those jobs for a variety of reasons. Lower and middle class individuals need to also have the ability to be able to work for fair wages and be able to provide for their families. There is a huge swath of America where things are very dire from a employment prospect standpoint.

American government and corporate policy dictated that more and more jobs would move overseas. This has benefited a lot of people but it has also left tens of millions of people and their families without a meaningful upward mobility.

I think I read a stat a while ago that indicated 150 million American's (60%) would not and can not fund a $400 emergency without borrowing. That is not even a decent smartphone or steakhouse dinner for the finance and tech people.
