It's not a bad idea, and I would never question anyone who wanted one, but it's not a "must". I've never felt compelled to own or use one.

I bought a Garmin Inreach Mini this summer, I was way up north close to the Territories with my Dad camping. 400km from the nearest town and the thing is we were heading across a huge lake, not paying for the subscription all year but I felt better having it on that trip.

The trip was planned for ten days too, and they say he was well prepared, so he would've had enough food for regular consumption of 10 days. Rationing that out could probably last a month, plus hopefully had some extra + foraging. I imagine that was completely exhausted by this point, hence the near-collapse condition.

The one somewhat new benefit I like from the new iPhones is that they to now have Satellite Tracking for this kind of thing. Not sure how performance compares to the InReach though...but it's nice that there's no subscription.

This is true. He probably had some food and water was not an issue. He is a young guy and in good health. Dirt bikes were a thing for him.

Depends how much energy you have stored in fat or tissue. If you are really lean it's probably 2-4 weeks. if you have lots of fat it would be longer.

So long as its not a 'Donner Party' scenario I suppose...

I think it may be slightly more limited than the network that Garmin uses, but in most of North America it is very good. I had been considering getting an in reach, but won’t bother now with the iPhone capability.

And it’s free for the next while, so big bonus there too. And it allows for non emergency texting, so can just keep in touch or advise if running a bit late.

It is reported that he is out of the hospital now which is great news. When they said he was being treated for frostbite, you never know how bad it might be, but it must have been somewhat minor if he is out already.

Still a lot of unanswered questions, but he said he was chased by a wolf and became lost. It seems kind of crazy, but I guess it's possible.

I've watched every episode of Survivorman.

I could easily do this.

I watched most episodes of survivorman, I would fall into a frozen lake within minutes and would be a cartoon frozen ice cube when found.

I'd be that hiker that people were looking for and after 50 days just shows up having been staying at the Airport Radisson the whole time.

"Hiking sucks. I stayed at the Hotel. You were looking for me in the woods? Yeah....I wasn't there."
