In regards to Marner, I think there's a perception amongst some of their fans, and maybe some in Management, that he's not much of a playoff performer- regardless of how many points he puts up. This was exacerbated by the video of his linemates giving him crap on the bench in last season's playoffs, along with some of the replays that showed him letting up in traffic, playing bad defense, etc.
I wonder if he could be had (and I'm not suggesting the Flames go after him) for the right package that included a lights-out D-man, and a few other pieces to improve the depth of their roster. I'm positive they want a good, younger G, but where would they get one of those?

Not to mention that Tavares is off the books this summer as well.

I was in the either sign or trade in the offseason camp but that trade was great value at the time. I still thought they had a pretty good chance at a good run with the team they had and then Huberdeau had the biggest regression in league history and the team fell apart.

Re: Toronto cap situation... yeah, that is tough. OEL + Domi maybe gets you there $wise, but opens a hole on Toronto's back end, and both players have limited trade protection to worry about as well. Not sure either would willingly come here.

There's always a lot of 20/20 hindsight going on when this comes up. My recollection is that there were some posters (many who disliked Treliving anyway) who had predicted he'd get a terrible return. Then when the trade came out and people were saying it was a good return, they then said "well, they're only signed for a year - if those players don't get signed long term, Treliving has failed". Now, of course, it's clear signing long term was a mistake.
I've always hated long term contracts. But, of course, they're a league reality if you want to retain or attract players.

My understanding with Marner is both the team and the player want him to stay. He will either get an extension done with the Leafs or become a UFA. He has no reason to waive his NMC.

Yeah there was a lot of "OMG Treliving fleeced him" going on around the league when the trade happened.
Huberdeau had outscored Tkachuk the year before (and over the entire like 4 season period prior to the trade) and you got Weegar, a 1st, and a prospect on top of that.
Nobody predicted Huberdeau would be come a 50 point forward, there was no precident for that type of decline (hence it being the biggest single season drop ever).
With hindsight it's easy to say they should have taken another package, or taken that package, kept the 1st and re-signed Weegar and tried to flip Huberdeau before the season started.
But at the time it was like "We found our Gaudreau replacement and added a top 4 d-man with a 1st round pick attached"

Leafs and Avs have internal cap of $13.25 mil AAV (Matthews) and $12.6 mil AAV (Mackinnon) respectively
Will be interesting to see if either team can sign Marner or Rantanen for less than that
LeBrun says Rantanen believes he can get $14 mil on the open market
Tavares has made it clear he wants to stay in Toronto
One possibility is to use deferred salary to bridge the financial gap
Conroy is scouting the OHL right now while Flames are on road trip
Not news that the Flames are looking for a 2nd line center that is age appropriate and play with the Flames for 3 to 5 years at least
Could be aggressive beyond the center search all depending on if the Flames stay in the mix
Could be bigger players than anticipated at the deadline
LeBrun says a lot of teams are looking for centers
Treliving has indicated the Leafs will be looking at center depth
Trotz wants to upgrade at center
Teams looking to upgrade at center - Easier said than done
Kakko name has resurfaced in trade talks
Rangers not giving him away
Ice time is an issue for Kakko and probably would like a fresh start

So, with the cap going up (as much as 9 million). With Tavares likely taking a steep discount, it would seem that the leafs could add Kadri without retention even factoring a raise for Marner. Whether or how to do that before the trade dealdline, i leave that to folks way smarter and familiar with voth rosters to determine.
Center depth of Matthews, Tavares, Kadri, Domi does seem like exactly what they'd need to actually have a chance in the post season.
On the flames end, I have no idea how they replace Kadri, much less add two centers, which is what they'd realistically need. But im sure others have ideas

The more i look at it, the more i think Conroy and Huska are trying to emulate vegas overall rather than Dallas. Maybe a mix of the two?
Roll 4 lines, uptempo hockey with an emphasis on grinding the other team down, vets at every position, stud goalie, focus on acquiring defense, an us against the world mindset, trying to build a winning mentality regardless of roster moves, and now maybe looking to add a couple of assets at the deadline.
But also holding on to picks to get youger and drafting well like Dallas.
Trying to walk a line, for better or worse. Hopefully better!

Is Kuzemenko worth anything?
Should the Flames bench him and call up Pelletier?

There was a lot of that going around, but personally I never understood that. My position was always that Zito got the younger player who would be a franchise player for a much longer time for them. Given the Panthers cap situation, it seemed likely that they wouldn't be able to keep Huberdeau and Weegar long term unless they dumped some of their key players.
I always thought it was a great deal for the Panthers and took the wait and see approach for us. There was so much criticism of Huberdeau coming out of Florida at the time regarding his playoff performances, and after the trade I went back and read more about what fans said about him over the years and realized he was a pretty polarizing player among the media and fanbase. A lot of comments about lack of effort, unable to find chemistry with top line guys, and 5-on-5 production.
It was quite roller coaster ride. My initial reaction was great trade for Florida, and a little apprehensive for the Flames unless they could flip Huberdeau for someone younger or sign him. But then when they signed him, it was like making a monkey paw wish. Not a guy you give that much money too. I never thought his production would fall off like it did obviously, I don't think anyone did. But I never thought he was a driver either.
