BC hiker missing 5 weeks found alive.
Amazing stuff.
Quote:
A hiker who went missing in northeast British Columbia's backcountry has been found after surviving more than five weeks in a remote provincial park as snow fell and temperatures plunged below –20 C.
Sam Benastick, who was reported missing after failing to return home on Oct. 17 from a 10-day camping trip, was reportedly found on a service road Tuesday, supporting himself with two walking sticks and his cut-up sleeping bag wrapped around his legs for warmth.
CBC News confirmed Benastick had been found through family, as well as with people involved in the search in Redfern-Keily Provincial Park, about 250 kilometres northwest of Fort St. John, B.C.
Including the planned 10-day duration of his camping trip, he was in the wild for a total of 50 days and considered missing for more than five weeks.

And we wonder why BC lags behind other provinces in life satisfaction. Can’t blame him, his journey still sounds better than living in fort st john

I read the whole article and it still doesn't seem to explain what happened. Like, was he lost? Did he just decide, "you know, I like it out here, I'm going to build a shelter and hang out"? He almost collapsed getting into the ambulance and there does not appear to be any explanation about why he didn't return to civilization sooner.

I'm guessing he went deep back country with the bike and it crapped out, phone went dead and was lost.
How people do this stuff and not bring a satellite communicator I have no idea.
Was following this on Facebook, true testament to his wilderness skills to survive. Was up in that area for the last 2 weeks and weather was absolutely horrible. Blizzard, freezing rain, cold, windy.

He got signal for a few minutes and saw that Trump won. Figured he'd take his chances with the bear.

If you're doing 10 days backcountry having an InReach device is a must.

Or his car crapped out on him. The story said that he stayed in his car for a couple of days before leaving to make camp for 10-15 days, and then moving camp again. The original trip was only supposed to be for 10 days.
You can go a long time in that area even where there are service roads and not see another person, so even if he wasn't "lost", he may have just been holding out for a long time that someone would come down the road.
Who knows I guess. I imagine he isn't up for much conversation yet.

I take one even on an easy hike, but I can get lost in a parking lot.

He's probably a little tired and hasn't been able to explain his story yet.
Give him a few days.

Crazy story and lots of unanswered questions. Just have to wait. I know Sam. He worked in Alberta and stayed in the accommodation I manage two summers ago. He was a quiet guy and an exemplary employee. So happy he is OK.

I would bet he sheltered in place hoping someone would find him. Then once it was hike or die he started to move to try to find his way out.

In one of the stories it said he packed peanut butter. Fifty days is a long time, but it's high energy and compact. If you rationed well, a couple of jars could probably pull you though so you at least wouldn't die.
I am looking forward to hearing the full story when it comes out.
