It means that the contenders find another gear, and the pretenders haven't got another gear to find. Often teams that look good early in the season sort of fizzle out after the All-Star break because they can't step up the intensity.

This team is going to have to find some primary scoring before it can have another gear.

To add on to this, Calgary is winning because their players are playing at maximum effort. You've heard the expression of teams wanting to win the SC needing to "step up and play at another level come playoff time". Calgary may be not be capable of playing at another level.

Don't be surprised if a team like Nashville starts to regroup and eventually gets into a playoff spot.

Have to love the effort, but I don't think this is a playoff team.

We probably miss and finish around 10th in the conference.

I don’t care, to be honest

Expectations were super low coming in. Lots of good stories

I will enjoy the good efforts, be disappointed when they lose (by their own doing, specifically) and happily live with the results.

To me these games are a measuring stick of where they are at.

Nashville is already 7 points back of a wild card spot without any games in hand. I'd be very surprised if they ended up in the playoffs. The Flames are usually the ones in that position at this point of the season, and we know how hard it is to make up points.

Our leading forward is on pace for 44 points. Our leading scorer is on pace for 45 points.

Has a team with offensive numbers like that ever made the playoffs?

Hard work and unbelievable goaltending has us in this position. Hard work will only carry you so far if you can’t score once you start playing better teams. You might get the odd Colorado and Edmonton game and win 5-3 because of their terrible goaltending.

7 points is nothing at this stage of the season. They just need to go on a bit of a run.

I find your lack of faith disturbing.

It's far from a certainty. They have some bad offensive metrics that will eventually catch up with them regardless of the goaltending. Part of me wants it to continue as it has been fun, but the other part wants the shoe to drop soon so that this rebuild can truly benefit from another high pick.

They won't lose are a good enough clip to crack the bottom 10. Cheering for losses right now is cheering for no playoffs and losing their pick to MTL, which is the worst outcome.

So... *dong* shame!

You also have to look a at strength of schedule remaining. IIRC, Calgary has played a much tougher schedule than Edmonton so far.

Following the Flames for my entire life makes me aware that strength of schedule means absolutely F all. They've already #### the bed against two "lesser" teams to start this road trip. At least teams that are lesser than the ones the Flames had been outplaying and beating recently at home.

2nd in the Pacific on US thanksgiving

Playoff team or not they are still gonna lose games, especially on the road. Both of the last two could have gone either way. LA just lost 7-2 to the Sharks, Canucks lost to the Pens. Its a long season, those two teams are direct competition.

It's their -1 goal differential that is concerning.

The good part is that there are only 5 teams in the West with positive goal differential

There are 2 at 0. So, Calgary is 8th in goal differential.

One of my go-to stats to determine if a team will make the playoffs or not. Almost never fails, and even if it does fail and a team with a poor or negative differential happens to get in, they're quickly ushered out of the playoffs in round 1.

The real question is if the Flames Goaltending is sustainable.

Because if it keeps going like this, no doubt the Flames are a playoff team.

Vladar was amazing last night.

I dont think so. But I didn't think it would last this long, sooo who knows.

I think how they're winning in general isn't sustainable. Insane goaltending and late 3rd period comebacks.

I honestly believe the Flames have a solid shot at making the playoffs this year. That said, I think we’re still missing a bit of firepower on the top two lines. Adding some consistent scoring could really make the difference. Defensively, I feel like we’re in decent shape—just a few minor adjustments needed here and there. As for goaltending, I have zero concerns. Dustin Wolf looks ready to handle the starting role, and Vladar is a reliable backup. If we can address the scoring issue, I think we’re in good shape for a playoff push.
