The trajectory of where he was skating had him outside the crease. The only reason that changed was because of the push.

I wouldn't have challenged that, sort of get it though
the Eeyore in me feels other teams may have got the goal on the ice call and let it get reversed and not the other way round but I know all fans feel that way

They have to. The precedent has been set. If they don't waive it off you take it to the league for review and ask for an explanation. Nothing is going to change if coaches and teams don't start pushing back on the league not holding the officiating team accountable. Take the fines but keep shoving it down their throat.
