I loved satellite hot stove owning the second period intermission. Hockey people talking about interesting hockey things. Regardless of how it ended, cherry was the first period intermission.

Compare that to the absolute dross we get now especially when it’s now about marketing especially oilers, and not actually talking about hockey. It shows how far hnic has fallen. Do any of us need more stories about sather’s grandma in whitecourt who sewed sweaters for Dave Keon’s junior team?

Missing Duhatschek already. He was always good for an interesting Flames blurb in one of his semi-regular columns over at The Athletic. The Athletic has no beat writer for the Calgary Flames since Julian McKenzie replaced Ian Mendes in Ottawa. The last Flames article was posted by Pierre LeBrun on October 15th. There are so many great stories to be told about this young, exciting team and there is no one to tell them. Why do I keep allowing the Athletic to auto-renew my subscription?

Truth! I met him at the airport once waiting for our delayed flight to leave, and I was a little starstruck. He invited me to come have a beer with him and his colleagues. He was a pleasure to chat with.

I was on the same flight from London as him.

Wish I’d struck up a conversation with him. Everyone loves that on a flight.

Yeah. I might cut mine. No Flames writer.

I do like the sports version of Connections though.

The Athletic was refreshing when it came out and while there wasn’t tonnes of Flames content, the content it did have was incisive and almost always worth a read.

Now the Athletic is increasingly migrating to where others were, it’s chasing the money. There is very little money in it by covering the Flames, so they won’t be covered.

I’m probably going to save myself a couple of bucks a month by ditching it.
