The obsession with height in goalies the last decade has been insane. Wolf is 6 feet, not 5'4
Yeah the obsession with tall goalies has gotten out of hand, some of the best goalies ever were shorter than Wolf.

Fuhr, Vernon, Esposito, Belfour and even the greats Terry Sawchuk and Jacques Plante were smaller.

That was a different era for sure.

It's not an obsession, its more of a fact.

Wolf's success is more of the exception, but will likely open the door and some eyes for some smaller goalies getting a fair chance.

Different eras for sure. With today's sticks, going cookie shelf is infinitely easier than it was 20 years ago. So being bigger is an advantage. That is difficult to dispute.

However, there is more to goaltending than just size and positioning. Anticipation, reflexes, and lateral movement are all important factors as well. And though Wolf gives up a lot with respect to size - a completely valid criticism - he is demonstrating that he is elite in these other areas.

He is always going to be small, but the kid can goalie!

He's showing that being 'able to goalie' trumps stature when the level of talent is elite.

Otherwise the biggest guy would be the shoo in for the vezina annually.

Tiny Thompson was only 5'10" and had 1.15 GAA backstopping the Bruins to a Stanley Cup in 1929 as a rookie.

Flames' Dustin Wolf proving Calder Trophy buzz is warranted https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article...-is-warranted/

It's almost like that buzz started here, on calgarypuck.

You're not his teammate. No need to use his nickname.

I get it though. 3 or 4 inches is a lot when you think about net coverage. That's 3 or 4 inches taller, probably also means 3 or 4 inches more coverage vertically, and more arm reach each side.

Don't know if this was posted yet but Dom at the Athletic gave Wolf some Calder props in his 16 stats column today:

Quote:
2. Dustin Wolf: Calder Trophy favorite
The rookie goaltender has a .925 save percentage in 10 games this season and has already saved 8.2 goals above expected, good for ninth in the league. That’s sandwiched between Juuse Saros and Andrei Vasilevskiy — good company to keep.
Wolf looks as dominant as he did in the AHL and if we were voting for the Calder after the first quarter, he’d be my pick.
