We hung on to beat a crappy team with another 3rd period comeback. Wolf and low event hockey is keeping them in games.
It’s just crazy when Craig did everything he can to tank the season the entire NHL turns mid. Anaheim is 4 points back from us. Things can change in hurry. Anaheim could give us Vancouver and Edmonton the boot down the standings.
Seattle is in striking distance as well. Just look at the stats of the teams in that mix it’s remarkable to be in any race for any of them with the putrid special teams.
Not a lot of good teams this year especially out west.

The good teams tend to up their game after the All Star break. I’m not sure the Flames can do that.

Wolf has a .908 over 28 NHL career games. For anyone worried about the small sample size this year the career sample size is getting to the point that one can say he is a pretty good NHL goalie.

If some of their forwards start burying pucks and their pp becomes even mediocre they can.
Sharongovich
Huberdeau
Zary
Pospisil
Coleman
Kadri
Kuzmenko
Have all gone cold. You have to think a few of them can step up at some point.

From that group who did you expect to have progression this year. Coleman had a career year.
Sharangovich slow out the gate the injury hampered him but he’s been invisible as he was for la good stretch last year.
Huberdeau had 12 goals last year lol.
The rest have been disappointing poor play or just same bad luck but we also place a super safe game that doesn’t preach much creativity. It’s going to be hard to score when the whole system is he safe as possible and hope for a bounce or PP goal.
Maybe the PP wakes up? Likely not if last season so far is any indication.
At least our goalie looks like a star.

2 points stolen again by Wolf. Guy looks so calm and in control 99% of the time.

I wouldn't say it was stolen.
XGF were 2.77 for the Flames and 2.49 for the Islanders according to Natural Stat Trick.
Moneypuck had the Flames as a 73.9% expected chance to win with xGF 3.25 to 1.69

Some will twist into a pretzel to convince themselves that the Flames aren't actually winning these games, and that isn't the most fun team we've had in ages. Goalies are part of the team, and this team is getting solid goaltending. Markstrom lost plenty of games and even a series for us. Kirkland with his second shootout winner, how could you not just be having fun with this team as a fan?

Yeah, it was more like Wolf secured the win that the Flames deserved for work ethic but were in danger of not getting because of non-scoring.

Pretty much, and while the Islanders arent great, Varlamov is no slouch either and he had a great game.

I think the reason I consider it stolen, is because the team struggles to score. He made some timely save to give the team a chance. Horvat scores to go up 2-0 in the 3rd and this team probably doesn't get a single point. It is one of those chicken and egg things. If the Flames score more often then the timing of these saves aren't as important. Unfortunately the Flames are struggling, so these save are critical to their success.

Could say the same about Varlamov and the Islanders too.
Both teams have similar struggles with the Flames having 51 goals in 19 games, compared to the Islanders 50 goals in 19 games.

The question becomes: do the Flames sell at the TDL, and, if so, who do they sell?

Yes, for the love of God, yes. Whatever you can.
This is an aging team despite being in a rebuild, there are maybe 2-3 pieces on the current roster who will be here when it counts.
Squeaking past the Islanders 2-1 in a shootout (and other equivalent results) cannot change the course.

I'd still expect the Kuzmenko, Vladar, Rooney type pieces that are UFAs get sold.
But I'm less convinced pieces like Andersson or Coleman get moved with the team in a playoff spot. If the team continues as it's going then I think the earliest pieces like that get moved is the offseason.

Best part about Wolf is - remember when goalies could 'lose their net'? He doesn't seem to at all. Even when moving quickly left to right on extreme cross-crease plays, he ends up stopping on a dime, square to the shooter. It's really something

Not so much a progression from last year, but an improvement from what they're producing right now, to start the season.

True, but our guy also stole that extra point in the shoot out.

The same thing happened in 2015 when we had Gaudreau come in and was in the Calder conversation as well. As much fun as it was beating the Canucks that year, they probably would have been better served getting a higher pick and for sure not trading a 1st for Hamonic shortly after.
