NHL Players getting Venmo requests from fans that lost bets on the players/teams

lol

Gambling is evil and I hate how the league embraces it. But this is funny how dumb people can be

I will admit I like sports betting. But for me its basically a few bucks here and there with the odd bet going up to $20 or more.
The problem is everyone knows a guy who won $28,000 on some long shot NFL parlay, and guys will spend thousands chasing that jackpot. Most people never get there, and therein lies the problem.

I can understand that addiction can be out of people's control, but you gotta stop when it stops being fun so it doesn't turn into an addiction. My $0.02 anyway.

And then the $28,000 will get gambled away eventually anyway, so what’s the point?
I think it’s all pretty silly and mostly likely destroying some lives at the end of the day.

For those without a subscription, here is quotes from the article

	Quote:

		| “I’ve been sent Venmo requests before,” one NHL player surveyed in The Athletic’s player poll said. “Like, ‘Hey, I bet on you guys to win and you blew it. So give me back my 50 bucks.’”
That player said he found it “comical.”

“I think I paid one guy back once,” he said with a laugh. “Sent him like 20 bucks.”

Of course, the Internet being what it is, it’s not always terribly funny. Almost one-third of the 161 players polled said they’ve been getting more harassing messages from fans since sports betting has become legal in more states.
 |
There's more and the article talks about how common place this is becoming.

Just wait until a player gets stalked or assaulted by some degenerate gambler, it'll be really funny then.

I don't know how Venmo works, but don't you need the person's email or phone number to send a request? Can you do it just through a regular social media account?

If the latter then I'm asking Bill Gates for money as compensation for Windows.

I almost blew my betting account balance to $0, but then Rasmus scored the game tying goal yesterday and now I have another $800 to gamble away.

Do these gamblers send players a portion of their winnings when the player's performance results in a winning bet?

Today's gambling apparatus that allows people to lose their life savings from apps on their phones on their couch is pure evil. That said anyone who threatens professional athletes based on their gambling losses is pure garbage.

I absolutely despise sports gambling and it sucks to see so many leagues embrace that ####. Doesn't get more hypocritical than selling out to gambling companies but harshly punishing players when they engage in the very product the league is proudly hawking.

Anyone who blames the athletes for their gambling losses, is probably the kind of person who is going to be separated from their money sooner or later, regardless.
Having said that, I really dislike all this promotion of gambling.

It's a bit of a different issue. A player in debt for gambling is pronne to manipulation of the games.

Betting is addictive because of that once in a blue moon when it pays off big.
Then because of that dump truck of dopamine they experienced people will circle back to throw down money trying to recapture that one time and in the process accrue more losses than money they won that one time.

The same science is behind what makes other things addictive, including toxic relationships.

Be aware of this and give yourself a cap if you're doing it, don't be dumb and delude yourself into thinking you're smarter than the system/game. That just makes you another victim to it.
