Zary is 2 points back for the team lead in points lol. It’s not like his play has slipped either. He could have easily had 5 points in our last 3 games.
It’s also an offensively challenged team. Mangiapane plays with better players.

I think Wolf and Zary are different entities.
Wolf has literally been the best goalie everywhere he went. Not one of the best. The best. It looks like he is starting to trend in that direction in the NHL. Keeping in mind it’s early. But he has proven himself at every level. I’m pretty sure he will do it. Last season I was not sure. He is a machine.
Zary has looked very promising. But he’s not quite there yet. There have been many games where I thought he was the Flames best forward. The LA game was a perfect example. But 1 point in 11 games also shows that he hasn’t figured out how to finish. Once he figures out that part he may well be our best forward.

Sure I understand that but guys sign into UFA years all the time, it's a balance for them and the team. Most young players signing long term deals eat up some of those UFA seasons. The Brad Treliving method of walking your future star to free agency isn't the norm.
Personally Wolf is a guy I'd buy into and gamble with. Not suggesting they play fast and loose with the cap room just because they have it but if you think you have a legit #1 goalie at the age of 23-24, sign him.

If this career trajectory continues, 8x8 seems like a good deal.

The deal still ends for him to get another decent contract if he plays well.

I think he ends up lower at around 6.5m x6. Just a hunch that he doesn't care that much about money after signing his last contract.

What if we offered his parents 3 camels?
Maybe throw in a goat or 2 as a deal-sweetener? Wolves like goat-meat right?

The suggestions are passing the "RFA test" here. If you wouldn't trade a player for the RFA compensation picks + cap space, it's a good deal. If you would, then you're offering too much.

Wolf has always ended up being the best goalie in whatever league he's been in, and the early NHL returns are looking very promising.
Lock him in for as long as you can as soon as you can.

The leader is on pace for 50 points. Not a high bar.
Zary is on pace for 36 points.

I think ottenger is a good comparable. Blew everyone away with his Calgary performance. Got a $4m x 3y followed by $8.25m x 8

I wasn't commenting on duration of contract. Maybe think of those two numbers providing reasonable points of triangulation. Assuming the flames want to sign him long term after one good season, it will be a cap hit of more than $4m and less than $8.25m. A shorter term contract will be around $4m. and a longer term contract less than $8m.
From Wolfy's perspective, a longish term contract is probably pretty ideal. He's only 23 and good goalies don't decline until into their 30s. So wolf could sign long-term, guarantee some great earnings, and then sign another big money contract in his early 30s if he performs.
For the flames, it's a mixed bag. Sign him longer term now and you can reduce the cap hit in the later years of the deal when the team will be in a competing window. Conversely, if he sucks after signing the deal, the team would then have two big money players underperforming (the other being huberdeau)
