Default What would you sign Wolf for this summer?

I feel like we should be proactive on this one as soon as possible. 8x$7 ?

Can't sign him until next year, which is good, because that will give the team a year to see what they've got (as opposed to basing an 8 year decision on a 10 game sample size)

That's where I would put it.

Unfortunately, Wolf cannot sign a contract until 1 July, 2025, and even then I highly doubt he is looking for an eight-year deal. Wolf's next contract will be 4–5 years, with heavy lockout protection, and covering his first or second year of UFA eligibility.

I doubt he’s accepting $7 per year. Plus I think it’s below league minimum.

He’s largely in the same boat as Zary but an even smaller sample size. Could be a star, could be a one hit wonder. Lock him up and it could cripple the franchise if he’s a bust. Wait until he proves it and he could Tkachuk.

No matter what happens, many people on CP will be angry and claim they knew better all along.

Oh boy, I've been looking forward to this thread! Think it's going to be an interesting discussion, and it'll kind of bleed into a general strategy of how the Flames handle young players as they look to the "competitive years" of their rebuild.

Can we start with some basic facts?

-When does Wolf's current contract end?
-When is he eligible to be extended, and for how long?
-What year would Wolf become a FA?

For the OP's original suggestion, I don't think you would have to pay him that much on a long-term contract, would you? Saros just signed $7.5M x 8, and he's an established star. I think the point of signing players to long contracts really early in their career is that you overpay them for a few years (relative to performance) and then underpay them for a few years. So wouldn't the long-term extension for Wolf be like 8 x $5M or something?

Isn’t he American ? He probably wants to go home. Stupid Craig and the 2 year deal.

I would do 4-5 years @ 7.45m a season.

Right now? From the start of this season, 2 years, $850K per season.

Changed title from right now lol

I’m traumatized by the old flames way so I’m hoping we get long term stuff done for Wolf and Zary as soon as we can.

Not everyone will leave. If we pay them and have a competitive team they will stay.

Players want to be paid but they also want to win.

Why wouldn't he be looking for a eight year deal?

So he can hit UFA at an age where he can hit it big.

5+8 years is better than 8 + ?.

Zary is doing very well. Great even! But why all this hyperbole? What wolf is showing is that he's likely the best goalie we've had since kipper. Zary has not shown that level of game changing ability, yet. Zary contract will not be like wolf contract unless we really #### up.

I’d sign him for $88 million per year.

Whatever it takes I guess.

Every time I watch him live I’m blown away by how good he is. It doesn’t feel like something that comes across as well on TV, but he’s already one of the best goalies I’ve ever seen play.

Zary has 1 point in the last 11 games.

For perspective.

My muscles still hurt from watching him come across and make the save/goal against LA.

Agreed he is one of the best goalies I have seen.

I'd give wolf 7 or 8 longterm. Easy.

Zary I think I start at 5x5 offer. Mangiapane had a better track record and he didn't get that much.
