He’s more likely to still be in the AHL that playing meaningful minutes in the NHL, absent a lot of luck.

You’re probably right. But if that’s the case, it could just delay this form of the team by a year or two. During which time, free agency could potentially be used to fill those spots…. Or other young players already in the system stepping up.
The point is that, in the long-term, it could be the layout of a new core for this team after the rebuild.

The question is whether he’s quitting the Ducks, or quitting from being an NHL player.

The Ducks. He has had a bad taste in his mouth since the last contract was negotiated and just hates it there. I think Zegras will pop somewhere else for sure, he is way too talented not to.

I get the concerns about the progression (or lack thereof) but Buffalo has a pretty poor track record with developing these guys. If there was ever a team to target a young C in need of a change of scenery it's the Sabres. ROR, Eichel, Reinhart and Mittelstadt are glaring examples of that.

And now he has tanked his trade value for them.
They should have moved him once the rumours started circling early last season.

The last thing Calgary needs to be doing during the rebuild is trying to find core players by signing older UFA's to long term expensive contracts.
Calgary cannot rush this rebuild if it truly wants a contending team.
If they simply want a mushy middle team, we know they can do that.

I’m not talking about signing older UFAs to be part of the core. You mentioned that it was asking too much of the players drafted in 2025 and 2026 to be impact players by the 2026-2027 season - that they could be in the AHL even. I’m just saying if they’re not ready for the NHL then the spots they will eventually take as the core players of the team would be temporarily taken up by others until they make the team.

If they make the team.
Even a high percentage of top picks don’t become core players.
There is a reason why you need multiple high picks to hopefully hit on 2-3 of them.

Only somewhat related but I winced when they signed E Lindholm and Zadorov to those contracts. I don't especially like Boston but that is truly brutal. The Flames don't miss either player at all. They're better off without either player at any price (IMO), let alone the contracts they got.
