I don’t think anyone knows if Helenius is available, given how high Buffalo were on him prior, I would say they likely wouldn’t want to part with him.
With that said, Noodles does think Andersson is worth a kings ransom (multiple firsts) and agreed with the barn burner boys that the Flames really shouldn’t try and play themselves into mediocrity again this year. That MTL trade just haunts flames success sadly, he echos the mantra of selling off valuable assets and just riding the young guys.
Seemed like they all felt Craig knows this and knew his plan was to do just that, but closer to the deadline.

Friedman adds Nedeljkovic’s name to the goalies that could be moved.
My point being, Vladar isn’t the only goalie on the market. Not too sure how many teams are looking to add there. Injuries can change things but I suspect the market could be a bit soft at the moment.

What the heck is going on in Pittsburgh? Jarry's been back from his conditioning stint in the AHL since Saturday but since then the Penguins have started Blomqvist (let in 7 goals on Monday) and Nedeljkovic (another loss). I could see why they are doing this if the other guys are playing well but they both stink and Jarry is the guy they have signed until 2028. That organization has kind of taken a turn for the worse and Sullivan has had a really good run but it feels like both parties would be better off starting anew.

Jarry has been horrible stretching into last season. They potentially just don't want to play him.

The problem with waiting until the deadline to trade everyone is that the team, so far, is too good to fall enough. We need to take out some of the supports earlier on to make the collapse longer and give us more runway to sneak into the top 10 of the draft.
The Monahan trade is potentially the worst in the history of the franchise.

I’m not as nervous with reports that there’s a pretty big drop off after 5/6 this year. Obviously it would be nice to keep that pick regardless, but I maybe it’s a wash if you pry a guy like Helenius out of Buffalo.
But yeah. No doubt about it, the Monahan trade is easily one of the worst, most short sighted trades in history. Phaneuf is up there, too, but I’d take that one over the Monahan one.

A Nashville win tomorrow shoots them from 32nd to a tie in 25th and 4 points striking distance of us.
It's early but it is a pretty important tanking game for us, and for them to get their season turned around.
A bunch of teams behind us have played less games as well and have positive goal differential. We are 1 or 2 teams in the top 15 with a negative goal differential. If the goaltending falters even a bit, things will get ugly fast.

If we could form a trade somehow around Andersson and Helenius, I think that would be a terrific path. Buffalo could absolutely use Andersson and is likely in 'win-now' mode after so many years of mediocrity, and Helenius is exactly the right prescription for the Flames.

As much as I love Weegar and Andersson, I have a hard time making an argument to keep them given the current construction of the team.
As for a vet who wants out, I would put my money on Kadri, though at his age and term its tough to think anyone would take him without retention. Which would be stupid.

If Helenius is considered a core piece for buffalo going forward, it just means they have lost faith in their other young centers they have committed big $$ to

The Flames should be willing to do it all as it pertains to maximizing the return on Rasmus. Take on a bad contract with another year or term left and eat 50% on Andersson to open up more flexibility for the acquiring team so they are not only paying for a top pairing D making $2.75M against the cap this year and next but they are also freeing up space in the summer to bolster their lineup. Flames can accommodate any of those requirements if a team is willing to pay the price.
Could they get a teams top prospect drafted from 22-24 as well as some future picks? Seems likely if they maximize the asset

Don't think its a good idea to tie up 2 retention spots for next season with Andersson and Markstrom.

24 years old, 6'4" dman...kind of fits the young+big dmen mold that Conroy has been acquiring. Something like Samuelsson + 1st (or Helenius) for Andersson would really be in line with the type of deals Conroy has made too.

If you aren't getting a high quality forward prospect back for Ras thats a massive strikeout.

Tie it up if you determine the Andersson trade as the best value for one of the spots.
Don't tie it up if you foresee needing two spots next year, and value to be higher.

Why not? So many teams that use retention at the deadline as a third party only seem to get mid round picks as their reward for helping so I struggle to see why the team would utilize and maximize their own asset to the fullest?

Still seems hard to figure out what the value of retention is for extra years.
Is it a Kevin Bahl or is it the 1st rd pick?

The Monahan trade is potentially the worst in the history of the franchise.

But the problem with trying to make a trade now is that fewer teams have the necessary cap space. How many major trades go down this time of year?

If I was running a team I would value every asset we own at all times.
Every player
Every prospect
Every pick
Retention slots
And I'd move the assets (if I wanted to) when the value was met.
If you're constantly worried about doing better than you think you should you'll never do anything.

I'm definitely all aboard the tank train, we need promising talent at every position.
What I worry about just a tad is a situation like Buffalo or Montreal, or even multiple versions of Edmonton that maybe warrants some more analysis. You don't want to just throw your young players to the wolves, you want to insulate them with veterans to help them grow. Buffalo and Montreal should be coming out of their rebuilds but theyre floundering.
I don't think Zary would look as great as he does now without that insulation of Kadri, Backlund and Coleman.
Having said all that, I will drive Andersson to the airport if Noodles is right about him being worth a kings ransom.
