I think the issue with Wolf's calder chances is the equal tandem with Vladar. Flames won't change their plans unless Wolf starts outperforming Vladar so much it becomes silly to keep playing them equally. But as of now they're both giving about equal value so no need to push Wolf just for a personal trophy.

Wolf is 5-2-1, Vladar is 3-3-2

Wolf is 11th in the league in save percentage.

And most rookie goalies don’t get a shot at starting regularly

If Wolf plays 45 games and has 25 wins and a .920 or better save percentage then he has a good shot at being a nominee.

But really it all depends on the forwards.

If Michkov or Stankoven end up over a point per game then they probably win.

But if they get 60 points, and Wolf plays 50 games and wins 30...then it's probably Wolf.

Let's look at it this way:

Out of all goalies this year so far, based on stats and play, where would you rank Wolf? 10th-15th overall, maybe?

Where do Stankoven and Michkov rank amongst forwards? Not in the top 50, overall.

I still think Celebrini should be the likely winner if he doesn't miss anymore time.

Seeing him live in 2 days and will have a better idea what he is all about but when I watched that 1 game last week....he was pretty impressive.

Noodles (a goalie obviously) thinks if Wolf isn't #1 in the calder race he should be #2. Again, early. But, having him at 40-1 to win the Calder is laughable. If you are a betting person you should be all over that. 14:45 time stamp

Ya but there's 6-7x as many forwards as goalies in the league.

I think market matters as well. If Wolf is a Leaf there's probably a lot more momentum going his way with all the extra attention and coverage.

If Wolf was a Leaf he'd be touted as the next Patrick Roy, easily, no exaggeration.

If you look at it that way, it makes a worse case for Wolf.

65 goalies have played a minimum of 3 games this season, 74 have played 1. So use 74 goalies and let's put Wolf at 12 from your 10-15th overall. That puts him in the top 16.2% of goalies this season. If you go with 3 games min. then he is top 18.5%

There have been 669 players that have played a minimum.of 40 minutes ice-time, so what would be around 3+ games. 699 played 15 minutes or more, equal to maybe 1 game. Stankoven is currently 58th in points, or top 8.3% of players, and Michkov is 74th, or top 10.6%.

Relative to their peers, both would be in a higher percentile compared to Wolf.

Still loving the season Wolf has had so far and he'll only continue to get better. Also plays a much more important position, he'll be in discussion all season and hopefully at least get a nod.

Not really a fair comparison.

A goaltender ranked 15th is about average based on 30 regular goalies.

An average forward, based on top 9 forwards per team, would rank about 150th.

It’s just so hard to compare them, especially early in the season. Wolf likely needs about 50 starts to have a shot.

Although I’d be hard pressed to not say he’s been as good as any rookie in the league.
