First they closed all the Robin's Donuts, then all the Red Robins, then all the Baskin Robbins.
It's like something a Batman villain would do.

No joke.
My guess was that they were being very frugal, and wanted to change the fewest number of letters on their sign.

Forgot that the famous place sells gelato, seems that the old hood has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to frozen treats......
Anyways, the tea/coffe shop right by good life sells gelato, or it used too, we have not been for a while, so perhaps something changed.

Yep, that has to be the best rehash of store names ever. A bunch of friends and I literally burst out laughing when we saw that. You could still see the old name faded out on the building!

Why are there no more Baskin Robbins in Calgary?
So, they’re coming back and apparently will be in southcentre Mall.

I still mourn the loss of Menchie's Frozen Yogurt. 17 Avenue SW across from 5a Street and Kensington Road at 10a Street both used to have locations, plus the location on the US side of the international terminal at YYC. Used to love walking to the 17 Ave and Kensington locations.
Now all that's left is the Northland Plaza location.

Menchies is still open? I thought this type of "mix your own sh#t" concept was dead many years ago...

Well done! A 12 year bump and the convo continues unabated. This thread was as close to 2000 as 2024. Crazy.
Now…about that ice cream…

Over-rated as f-----ck. Don't get me wrong, it's alright, but certainly not good enough that I am willing to line up down 17 Ave SW for it.

How good can ice cream even get anyway. Like people are always expecting some out of body experience they can post on social media and tell their friends about. I’ll take a couple scoops of generic coffee flavoured or basic chocolate in a waffle cone, consume and get on with my day. Honestly people need to STFU about what their favourite ice cream place is.

It’s actually really good. That’s why people line up.

Walked by it yesterday, it is across from the food court.

It's good, but I have no problem stopping short of saying *really* good. I've had it a few times. It's fine.
If people lining up for something proved it was 'really good', then our conversation in the other thread about Chik-Fil-A would have gone rather differently. People sometimes line up for Tim Hortons, McDonald's, and Peter's Drive-In to the point that they have to put signage out saying that it's illegal to line up on the street for the drive-thru. Imagine trying to argue the superiority of Tim Hortons to... anything, really... on that basis alone.

Depends what you mean, I guess. Better ice cream -- taking flavour preference out of the equation -- is more dense and creamy; compare Häagen-Dazs to Breyer's Creamery Style (the actual 'ice cream', not the 'frozen dessert' in the blue tubs).

But I didn’t say it’s really good because people line up. I said people line up because it’s really good.
People line up for all sorts of crazy reasons. But in this case, it’s because it’s really good.
Now, that’s just referring to the quality of the ice cream and like for like flavours. Doesn’t mean every flavour is really good because that’s more subjective. Some people like tiger ice cream, other people are sane/not 100 years old.
I’ve had a lot of ice cream all over the world. And it’s among the best.
