I know some people don't want to laugh or be lighthearted in moments like this, and I get it. Obviously it is not exactly an uplifting time and all that. But I just can't help but laugh that the US empire is going to end up being brought down by cable news and social media. When I first started following politics all those years ago, it was...well, a loser's thing to do pretty much. Back in the election nights of the 90s, even for Canadian elections, most people didn't really pay attention, and they really didn't pay attention to US American elections. And outside of election cycles the vast majority of people didn't care about politics all that much, and talking about politics was something that was really not something you'd see all that often in the general public, it was pretty much just the politicos who followed it with any intensity outside of election cycles.

Now? It's absolutely inescapable, people you know who never used to care about politics are now the loudest voices. Cable news and social media have made the complexities and nuances of politics a thing of the past. Now it's just rage and bait posts and TV shows designed to prey on those base instincts. And the GOP has shown they understand how to convert this to their advantage far better than the Dems have. And you see it in those videos about things like tariffs, where the GOP convinces voters they will help them economically cause "the foreign countries will pay for them". Is that what's gonna happen? Definitely not. Are those voters likely to suffer the worst from those policies? Very likely yes. But does it matter once their vote is locked in? Not at all, especially when, as the GOP specialises in, they'll find someone else to blame.

Once foreign countries figured out investing in people sitting in front of a wall of screens and phones, posting the most divisive #### they can, was a far greater investment than in military as a means of defeating the US, then it was really over. Americans are dumb by nature, and foreign countries leveraged that incredibly well. Now those countries are in a position to get everything they want. They could never beat America in a straight up war, so they found another way. Full credit to them. Feel for the people of Ukraine and eventually Taiwan, collateral damage to the gullibility of Americans.

And that's ultimately it: if it was the US and the US only who was going to feel the pain for this I wouldn't really care, and frankly I'd probably be kind of happy about it. This has been coming and it is deserved, and this was always going to be the end game of unchecked capitalism. But since we're all going to feel the pain, goddamn it Murica.

Surely there have been many opportunities since then that the Democrats could have fixed this.

Unfortunately the collataral damage in many areas of life is going to suck, hard.
The reality is a rising tide will lift all boats. Or at least 95% of the boats.

The belief that the world has become zero sum has become prevelen especially among young men. In reality robber barons are taking the surplus.

Not sure how you work this belief back. Ironically MAGA as a value statement of a throwback to the 50s/60s would be embracing the rising tide idea that dominated so much of post war America.

I think think that's more a reflection of the quality of today's political parties. Not unlike Canada where a lot of junk is rising to the top to lead political parties.

For one thing they could have not left the nomination question to the last minute and spent a year going through a primary process. Although at this point I'm not sure anything would have realistically changed this outcome.

It’s going to be a wild, and likely pretty rough four years, but there’s not much else anyone can do aside from pushing useless anxiety, dread, and negativity aside and keep working towards something better with the hope that’s still possible.

Little disappointed to see people say things like America gets what it deserves or Gen Z cut their own throats. I get the need to blame people, but the sweeping generalizations don’t work. A lot of people didn’t vote for this, and a lot of people that this will impact couldn’t vote. Better just to learn from this and look out for the people that need our help. Might all get worse before it gets better, but better isn’t off the table, regardless of what any defeatist says.

Republicans:

President
Senate
House
Supreme Court

They've been given carte blanche to do whatever they do choose to do. No policy or law is off the table now. It's a MAGA Republican US and they have been given the keys willingly.

If resources were unlimited, then you'd have a point. But they are not, and as we all compete for scarce resources that are becoming scarcer, prices must rise and things become less affordable.

Think of something like surface water. It's a limited resource, allocated to cities, farms, industry, and other users who all want more for cheap. The more water that goes to producing widgets, the less is there for food. This causes prices to rise, which means people pay more for everything. So as more people rise in living standards, they buy more widgets, putting more pressure on a scarce resource, increasing prices. It's easy to see how this makes life less affordable for us as other countries rise. And that's just one resource.

Dems should have held an open convention.

I always thought she was an unimpressive candidate but just my opinion.

Others who knew more about her had no doubt as to her qualifications.

New laws require 60 votes in the senate in general (some exceptions around spending) so it's not carte blanche.

And not every R Senator is MAGA.

So it's not going to be as easy as all that, there's plenty Trump can do on his own.

I am so scared for the future, I know I live in Canada but I'm autistic and half blind. I have cried because I am so scared about me is coming for people like me. How does the world recover from atleast the next 4 years? How far is the USA going to go down the fascist road? and how is it going to spread to Alberta/Canada?

Scared is too soft a word, I'm terrified.

Honestly, time to turn off the American news, unsubscribe from political subreddits, and just be thankful you are here and not there. Not quite the comfort you want to hear, but there are a lot of people who will have mental anguish over this and being flooded with Trump/Musk/Russian propaganda isn't going to help.
