Finally saw LongLegs and felt it was a little overhyped. It was a good horror flick just not great. Still good to see horror movies making some money this year with this Alien, Terrifier, etc. 2024 has been a solid year for horror movies.

It’s a shame Late Night with the Devil ruined their rep before it started by using AI to make set art. Poisoned the well of opinion before it had a chance to shine, that and LongLegs were my two favourite horror films this year

I didn't even know about the AI controversy with Late Night with the Devil until after I saw it and truth be told I still would have enjoyed just as much it even if I knew. It was really well done IMO.

2024 has been great for horror.

In addition to what has recently been mentioned:
Abigail, Azrael, Chime, Exhuma, The First Omen, Immaculate, In a Violent Nature, Lisa Frankenstein, MadS, Oddity, Sleep (I saw it 2023 but it just made its way over recently), Sting.

Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person, Red Rooms, and Stopmotion also had partial 2023 releases but I'm counting for 2024.

Still need to see a few that are rated high like The Devil's Bath and Heretic.

Haven't seen any of these, but I'm a big fan of horror movies, so thank you for this!

Unrelated, me and a friend stumbled on to Creep on the weekend and we both enjoyed it so much we immediately watched Creep 2 right after. We enjoyed both.

Was it a case of AI taking jobs that people had an issue with it? I thought it was a fun little horror.

I feel like 90% of the movies all of you guys watch are horror movies. I'm not interested in the genre at all, this thread is a lot of scrolling these days...

Heretic is also out this weekend, and is receiving rave reviews. Looking forward to that one. Hugh Grant's post romcom career is rather fascinating. It looks like a must watch.

I'm not the biggest horror fan but some of the best movies from the past few years have been in that genre. I really wish we got more comedies but they aren't being made.

I watched the Apprentice this weekend and enjoyed it.

Sebastian Stan does a great job with Trumps mannerisms.

It covers his rise from the 70's to late 80's - pre-bankruptcy - and focuses on his relationship with Roy Cohn, which was pretty unknown to me and super interesting.

Only one scene would be considered "offside" or scandalous really. Most of it was fairly "neutral" all things considered.

would recommend.

Immaculate had something to work with, just flatlined in execution. Sweeney wasn't really the issue. She played the part as any pretty female lead in a weird Rosemary's baby rip off should have.

They rushed the landing and it killed the movie.

Well there's already dedicated Marvel or Star Wars threads and stuff if that's what you are after. The horror genre is one of the most popular today (2nd only to comedies) and it's one of the few genres that's coming out with original material that's not superhero, sequel based, or remakes of older movies. It seems like all the big studios are focusing on safe, formulaic stuff because the stakes are so high for big studio movies that nobody wants to take big risks with original material. There's really not that much in the way of great movies coming out in other genres relative to horror movies which is why you see them discussed more of late.

Its an interesting question though, what is the fascination with Horror films?

They are largely not my jam, I have nothing against them other than stupid teenage slasher flick...I have something against those.

There are some really good Horror films, but for me they have to be a little more cerebral.

For instance, while it wasnt a movie, I loved 'Midnight Mass.'

A lot of media these days is pretty bland. The dialogue, the subject matter, even the color palate. People want content that will actually stir emotions and provoke thought. Horror is doing a great job of that. You have the typical gore and body gore fests, but also movies that make you think a little.

The genre has attracted a lot of the more thought provoking writers and directors.

There are still plenty of mindless slasher movies but the genre has evolved and given the low budgets, directors don't have big studio execs looking over their shoulders, micromanaging, and are allowed to see their visions through. Late Night with the Devil, Oddity, Strange Darling, The Substance have a lot more to them than just mindless violence.

Not a horror fan either, I'll begrudgingly watch a few a year and sometimes you'll find a gem like Hereditary which I love. Overall I pretty much ignore the genre.
